Community Games Case Studies


Tutbury Community Fun Day (East Staffordshire)

 

Date:  Saturday 30th July 2011

Location: Tutbury Youth Centre, Cornmill Lane, Tutbury, Staffordshire, DE13 9HA

Opening or closing ceremonies:  

Cllr Liz Staples opened the event with a parade through the village to the Youth Centre to encourage a carnival atmosphere and a closing Camp Fire organised by the Scouts.

Sports & cultural activities:  

  • Discover Tutbury showed off the history of Tutbury
  • Extend Class demonstration in which people of all ages were invited to join and have a go
  • Village Dance group Ignition, completed two dance routines for people to watch, and offerd people the opportunity to try out some moves.
  • Village Karate group completed a 15-minute demonstration of skills, and then offered people the opportunity to try out kicking and punching techniques.
  • The Tisbury Health Walk Leaders led two walks from the Youth Centre around the Tisbury Mill.
  • Youth Service and Active Adults deliverd Art & Craft sessions to engage people of all ages.
  • Nellies fruit shop made up Fruit Smoothies.
  • Sports Development organised fun races along with a selection of large garden games for families to play amongst themselves.

Publicity / Promotion:  

  • A leaflet drop of the village was completed
  • All businesses on the high street were asked to display a poster advertising the event.
  • All children at the village school were given a leaflet
  • A press release was submitted to the local press.
  • Community Games Posters were displayed at the School & Youth Centre.
  • The local PCSO handed leaflets out

Event Successes:
 
Tutbury Community Funday was seen as a great success by those involved in the organising of the event, and were surprised by the number of people who turned up and joined in on the day.

It was good to see families taking part in activities together with grandchildren joining in with the Grandparents Extend Class and then playing each other at Frisbee.

Many families stayed for the majority of the afternoon making the most of a very warm and sunny day, which helped make the day a success.

The Meadow Games (Stafford)

 

Date:  Thursday 4th August 2011

Location:  Meadow Road, Penkside, Stafford, ST17 4JQ

  • Penkside Youth Community Champions
  • Families First (target youth team)

Opening or closing ceremonies:  

Event officially opened by Stuart Bishop who has done a lot of valued work in the Penkside area. The closing ceremony involved a small concert featuring local dance groups and bands


Sports & cultural activities:  

  • Zumba dance demonstration
  • Tug of war
  • Egg and spoon, sack, three legged races
  • Walking for health
  • 'Around the world' healthy eating cooking demonstrations
  • Arts and crafts - olympic flag making

Publicity / Promotion:  

  • Stafford Newsletter, Express and Star - press release
  • Posters and leaflets - distributed to local primary schools, leaflet drop to local houses, posters in community centres and shops in area
  • Internal newsletters and weekly notices at Stafford Borough Council

Event Successes:
 
Healthy eating cooking demonstration and good contacts made for future sessions. Keeping the event smoke free as high percentage of attendees do smoke. Getting so many people in the area to engage with local organisations to improve their lifestyles.

Girlguiding Mini Olympics - Let everyone go somewhere in 2011 (Tamworth)

 

Date:  Sunday 17th July 2011

Location:  Tamworth Athletics Stadium, Tamworth, Staffordshire, B77 2HA


Partners & groups involved:  

  • Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Young Leaders, Rangers, Leaders, Unit Helpers, Trefoil

Opening or closing ceremonies:  

Each unit made up a chant and participated in cheerleading and each girl made an Olympic Torch for the closing ceremony

 

Sports & cultural activities:  

  • Relay race
  • Egg & Spoon race
  • Skipping
  • Shot Put
  • Javelin
  • Discus with a difference

Publicity / Promotion:  

  • Through the local paper advertising the Tamworth Division Girl Guiding Mini Olympics, Let Everyone Go Somewhere in 2011

Event Successes:

The day was a success due to a good planning team who helped planned all the actitives and who gave up there time beforehand to make it a fun & safe event.  All the girls & leaders enjoyed the event and even carried on through the rain. All the girls loved joining in the actitives and all received a badge & medal.

Tamworth Fitness Festival (Tamworth)

Date:  Saturday 04th June 2011

Location:  Tamworth Castle Grounds, Tamworth, B79 9NA

Opening or closing ceremonies:  

NRG Streetdance hosted a 15 minute dance routine to open the event with the attendance of the Tamworth Mayor. Tamworth Male Voice Choir sung out the days events with a 15 minute time slot and the final song for the day being 'The National Anthem'

  • Face painting and several community groups will be in attendance promoting their cultural activities including Tamworth Roundtable and Tamworth Rotary Club.

Publicity / Promotion:  

  • The event was publicised via the Tamworth Herald before and after the event, Touch FM radio, TCR (Tamworth Community Radio), Facebook, Local Networking and Posters at over 60 different locations.

Event Successes:

The willingness of all involved to take part in an event next year and positive feedback for the event.

Uttoxeter Community Fun Day (East Staffordshire)

 

Date:  Tuesday 30th August 2011

Location:  Uttoxeter Heath Community Centre, Holly Rd, Uttoxeter, ST14 7DT

Opening or closing ceremonies:  

Local Councillor opened the event and welcomed the local community and inspired everyone to get involved in the activites taking place.

  • Bouncy Castle
  • Large inflatable slide & Sumo wrestling.

Publicity / Promotion:  

  • Leaflets were handed out to all those who attended Sport in the Hood sessions at Uttoxeter and the surrounding venues leading upto the event.
  • Posters and leaflets were also distributed around local shops and leisure centres to promote the event.
  • A press release went out in the local newspapers the week before the event.

Event Successes:

The main succes was being able to engage with the families of those who attended our Summer activites and encourage them to participate in activites as a family, which they can then carry on doing after the event.
