Stoke Sports Awards: O'Shea wins Disability Award
STEVEN O'Shea fended off strong competition to take home the Disability Award after his medal-winning performances in swimming and football. The Cliff Vale sportsman won the top prize after a fine year saw him scoop honours in both sports at 2009's Special Olympics in Leicester. The 32-year-old performed admirably at the event, winning two golds and a bronze medal in swimming. He followed that with another bronze medal after being part of England's Special Olympics football team. As well as competing, O'Shea, who has a learning disability, also helps coach the football side on a regular basis. Martin Fearn capped off a huge turnaround in his life to take the runners-up prize. Just over a year ago, Fearn, who has autism, spent most of the time playing computer games. But after becoming a full-time member of Strathmore College in Wolstanton, the 20-year-old prospered and became interested in badminton. And just seven months later, his success story was complete when he won gold at the Special Olympics in Leicester.
