Tag Festival in June for Learning Disabilities The presentation of an RFU President’s XV Award to Grasshoppers RFC has been the cue for the Middlesex club to take the next steps in their prize-winning initiative that supports rugby players with learning difficulties.
The Osterley club won the ‘One New Team’ category of the prestigious annual awards, supported by QBE, the specialist in business insurance. Leroy Arbouine, Grasshoppers’ community and schools liaison officer, received the winners’ trophy and a cheque for £500 from Rob Udwin, Chairman of the RFU Community Game Board and RFU Council member for Middlesex.
Their initiative began with a coaching project and tag rugby festival that involved two special needs schools in the borough of Hounslow.
It was clear to Grasshoppers that some of the youngsters wanted the opportunity to play rugby out of school and also there were a number of over-16s with mild learning difficulties (MLD) who were keen to play the game.
Now the club are planning a regular league and to help get it off the ground they are hosting a free one-day Tag rugby festival on Sunday, June 12 for around 100 adult MLD Mencap members.
"It’s all about introducing rugby to a wider audience, and continuing to cater for the interest we have seen since we started," said Leroy Arbouine.
"First we hope to get the local element established, going into our neighbouring boroughs with ‘clubs’ within Ruislip, Twickenham, Saracens and Grasshoppers. Then we can see what can be done with other clubs across London.
"The idea is for over-16s with a learning disability to play tag against each other once a week, on Sunday mornings, with coaching as part of their sessions. The club is ecstatic to have been given the President’s XV award and the prize money has been re-invested straight away to help fund the festival.
"It really is down to the hard work of our coaches, staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly with community groups, schools, charities and our local RFU Community Coaches to forge an integrated club that allows everyone with a passion for rugby the chance to get involved in the game." Rob Udwin said: "It was impressive and very touching to see the work Grasshoppers have done. It reinforced again what we know about rugby union, that it is a game for everyone to take part in and enjoy."
The festival called ‘Serious About Tag Rugby’ will be staged at Grasshoppers RFC’s MacFarlane Lane ground on Sunday June 12, from 10.30am to 3pm.
