New Disability Football Club for Telford

A new powerchair disability football club has been formed in Telford and Wrekin - making it the first of its kind in the county.

Telford Powerchair Football Club will be wearing the black and white shirts of the newly promoted AFC Telford United and will be the first disability club to be playing under the AFC Telford umbrella.

The new club has been established thanks to a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council, AFC Telford United, Shropshire Football Association and Telford College of Arts & Technology. The club is also supported by the council's ICan2 project, Shropshire Scope and Lord Silkin School and hopes to establish many more links with
schools, projects and people working with disability children and adults who want to take part in this game.

Powerchair Football is a fast and fun adapted version of the game which is open to anyone who is registered disabled, regardless of age or gender.  The club offers something for everyone, from regular training sessions to competing in both regional and national leagues.

On Saturday 16th July a group of young people with Visual Impairments (VI) participated in a multi-sports event designed to teach them new skills and also to inspire them through the power of the Olympics and Paralympics.

 

The event which was organised in partnership by Action for Blind People, Northamptonshire Association of the Blind (NAB) and Northamptonshire Sport was held at NAB’s Northampton base Wardington Court on Welford Road in Kingsthorpe.

 

During the day the young people participated in the sports of Kurling, Boccia and Goalball which is a Paralympic sport that can be played by anyone, but is designed specifically for people with Visual Impairments.

 

As an added inspirational element to the day’s events the young people received a talk from Janice Tillett who is from Northampton and has herself got a Visual Impairment. She has however represented Great Britain in Swimming at previous Paralympics winning a silver medal at the Barcelona games in 1992 that she brought along to show the young people and their families.

 

Janice told the young people about her childhood and the barriers she faced growing up with a Visual Impairment. However the inspirational bit was how she found a love and talent for sport that she used to overcome these barriers and by not taking no for an answer was able to reach the highest level possible in Swimming.

 

In the afternoon session the participants played in a Goalball tournament which gave them an opportunity to try out and show off their new skills that they’d learnt in the morning.

 

The event then concluded with a presentation ceremony in which everyone that took part was presented with a certificate and medals for the Goalball tournaments top 3 teams.

 

The day was viewed as an outstanding success by all concerned and more are planned for the future along with the aim of developing a Goalball team in Northamptonshire.
