Disabled Children Reach New Heights In South Staffordshire

On Saturday 17th September Penkridge Leisure Centre hosted South Staffordshire’s first Disability Family Fun Day.

Scores of people took part in the day, which provided a chance for disabled children and their families to try out a range of sports and activities. A 23-foot climbing wall proved to be a popular activity with children reaching new heights regardless of their disability. Other activities on offer included Archery, Basketball, Boccia, Crafts, Cricket, Dance, Golf, Facepainting, New Age Kurling, Polybat, Table Tennis and Trampolining.

Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) worked together with South Staffordshire Council to organise the event which was funded by Staffordshire County Council’s 'Aiming High' programme.

The event encouraged families to experience new sports in a safe and relaxed environment.

One of the parent’s commented “A fantastic day with a great choice of activities.”

Siblings were also able to join in the activities allowing families to enjoy the experience together.

One of the young disabled children commented “A really great day, would love to do it again.”

In partnership with South Staffordshire Council, SASSOT are looking to developing a Disability Sport Forum that will meet every couple of months to discuss developing opportunities for disabled people within the area.
