Short Break Activities for Disabled Children and Young People
Aiming High have announced the new providers for the period October 2011 to September 2012. As you will see there is a huge variety of activities that will be happening all over the county. Have a look at the activities and hopefully I will see you at some of them.
Provider: Able Too Forum
Activity: ? Weekly after school football club for one term at Fountains Special School, Burton. At the end of the term there will be the opportunity to continue to play football with the Junior section of the Able Too football club at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton. ? Weekend leisure, art and craft club in Burton. Including dance, art and multi sport based at Meadowside Leisure Centre.

Activity: Residential outdoor activities weekend courses for families of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Asperger’s Syndrome. Activities include outdoor site based activities and social activities in the evening.

Provider: Beaudesert Park Farm (D W Cope Partners)
Activity: Family fun days out on a traditional working farm. The days include cookery activities - creating a healthy lunch in the purpose built classroom to enjoy at lunchtime; a tour of the farm; rural craft session in the afternoon - making something to take home. Days will be individually structured to meet the needs of children and young people with different disabilities.

Provider: Gifted DJ Workshops
Activity: Weekly fun and creative DJ and Music Media workshops during 5 weeks of the summer school holidays 2012. Workshops include DJing, music production, Demo recording, MCing, singing and designing with creative images and media. Free taster sessions will be delivered in schools prior to the school holidays. Activity: Wild Play sessions in the school holidays which include exploring the environment and active play. Activities will include shelter building, pond dipping, bug hunts, a range of active games, outdoor cooking and orienteering. Children and young people will learn about nature and use arts and crafts to explore the environment. A number of family events at weekends or school holidays to include activities that can be continued at home, as well as face painting and willow weaving.

Provider: Stafford Branch National Autistic Society – LEGO Club and Yoga Club
Activity: ? LEGO Club – for higher functioning children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder aged 7-14. The group aims to increase social interaction and communication. The club is supported by staff but parents/carers remain at the centre for the session. ? Yoga Club – for children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder aged 7-14. The club helps children to learn relaxation techniques which will help with anxiety problems. It will also help with coordination, as well as doing a fun activity at their level of ability. The club is supported by staff but parents/carers remain at the centre for the session and can provide support to their child if needed.

Activity: Residential Outdoor Activity Weekend 2012 A two day Leisure Activity Course at Stanley Head tailor made for disabled children and their families. Activities will include: climbing, archery, caving, kayaking and expeditions with an overnight stay.
Santa Lunch at the Alton Towers Resort A full day of activities at the Alton Towers Resort. This will include: admission to the theme park (restricted area), a visit to Santa and the reindeers, access to crazy golf and the Splash Landings water park and a Christmas dinner.

Activity: Three six week programme of activities, trips and visits which will all be ASDAN accredited. Activities will include trampolining, sail ability, dance, theatre trips, music, and other leisure or sports activities including rock climbing or GPS orienteering. The programme is fully accessible and transport is also provided where required.

Provider: Letting in the Light
Activity: Digital animation workshops taking place in Staffordshire residential schools and outdoor education centres for disabled children and young people attending residential special schools. The sessions will use a range of digital media including photography, sound, image manipulation, animation and a variety of equipment and software to create exciting visuals and soundscapes. Each session will be adapted to ensure it is accessible to children with a variety of disabilities. No experience of using digital media is required. Please note this activity is only available to children who attend a residential special school.
Venue: Staffordshire residential special schools and outdoor education centres.
