Calling budding film stars!
Ten Town is trying to find a young wheelchair athlete to take part in a short film for an on-line educational resource.
Ten Town is a Stafford-based business that was originally started by my sister, Rebecca Sandy over 15 years ago. She was a primary school teacher who found that by turning numbers into memorable characters such as King One, Fiona Five and Sir Seven, her children’s number recognition and formation improved dramatically.
The scheme was also a success with other teachers and she ended up selling Ten Town to nearly two thousand schools and nurseries across the country. She wound down the company about four years ago when she was offered the chance to teach in New Zealand.
I am about to relaunch the scheme as an online educational resource which will include animations, online games and videos. In the process we have redesigned the original characters and felt it was important that the updated scheme reflected the Early Years Foundation Stage emphasis on promoting positive attitudes to difference and diversity. Therefore, Fiona Five is now a wheelchair athlete.
One of the aspects teachers like most about the scheme is the cross circular opportunities it offers. For example, Freddie Four is an explorer which leads to classroom discussion and activities related to “geography” and the world around us. Therefore, I am also making a short film with a real life explorer talking about some of his adventures.
Fiona Five runs the Ten Town sports centre and helps keep the rest of the characters fit and healthy. She has five favourite sports, eats five portions of fruit and veg every day etc and this stimulates activities relating to keeping fit and eating healthily.
I would very much like to make a short film with a young wheelchair athlete who would show us some of their favourite sports they like to play.
The scheme is aimed at Early Years and Key Stage 1 - so around the 5 year old age group. However, I would not be expected the subject of the film to be that young.
