A new powerchair disability football club has recently formed in Telford & Wrekin making it the first of its kind in the county.
Telford Powerchair Football Club will be wearing the black and white shirts of the recently promoted AFC Telford United and will be the first disability club to be playing under the AFC Telford umbrella.
The new club has been established thanks to a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council, AFC Telford United, Shropshire Football Association and Telford College of Arts & Technology.
The club is also supported by the Council’s ICan2 project and Lord Silkin School and hopes to establish many more links with schools, projects and people working with disability children and adults who want to take part in this game.
Powerchair football is a fast and fun adapted version of the game which is open to anyone who is registered disabled, regardless of age or gender.
Neil Nash, chairman of Telford Powerchair FC said, “This is a really exciting time for the club and we hope to go from strength to strength as a result of our new partnership with Telford. We are always on the look out for new players and have built the club on a strong policy of inclusiveness which means that everyone, regardless of ability, age or gender is made to feel welcome.”
Councillor Arnold England, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Well-being said, “The Telford Powerchair Football Club is making sport more accessible and affordable for all which is a key driver for Telford & Wrekin Council. We fully support the club in their development in Telford & Wrekin and wish them all the best for the coming season,”
