Disability Sport medium

Boccia2Boccia

Boccia is primarily designed for Cerebral Palsy athletes, however its is now open to other disability types

Boccia is a non-contact driven sport, which relies upon the skill and subtlety of the player rather than their size, speed or strength.

The aim of boccia is to propel a set of coloured balls and position them closer to a white 'marker' ball than those of your opponent.

The white ball is known as the 'jack' and the game is very similar in style to French Boules.

Boccia originated in Greece where players threw large stones at a stone target.

It was later adapted for players with severe cerebral palsy and has been developed into a game played by all, from purely a recreational level to a variety of competitive events.

A ball can be propelled by rolling, throwing or kicking. If a player is unable to throw or kick it, they can use a 'ramp' (assistive device).

If they are unable to release the ball with their hands players can use a head pointer. All players must be seated during the game.
