Staffordshire athletes blog their paths to London 2012

 As the start date of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games gets closer and closer a few Staffordshire athletes, who are aiming for selection to a GB Team, provide a monthly blog to track their progress over the next 12 months. Stars Squad

 

The Stars programme is a Youth Sport Trust initiative that was started in the North Stoke School Sport Partnership in 2009 and in the South Stoke School Sport Partnership in 2010.

 

There are currently 53 athletes in the City of Stoke-on-Trent who are in the squad. Being part of Stars Squad provides the athletes with opportunities to explore elite performances.To be part of the squad an athlete must be competing at a national standard and train or compete up to 15 hours a week.

The Olympic Flame journey

The Olympic Flame will come within one hour's journey of 95 per cent of the UK, spreading the excitement of the Games to everyone. The locations of the evening celebrations have already been announced and can be found, along with more information about the Olympic Torch Relay at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay

 

Stoke-on-Trent is a Host Community for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay one of only 66 evening celebration sites announced nationally. The free to attend evening celebration event will take place on Wednesday evening the 30 May 2012.

Inspire Programme 

 

The London 2012 Inspire Programme is your chance to be part of London 2012! It officially recognises outstanding projects and events inspired by the Games coming to the UK. Below is an example of one of the projects in Staffordshire that has been awarded the Inspire Mark.  For information on all the projects that have been awarded the Inspire Mark in the West Midlands visit the wmfor2012 website 

Children in Care Games

The project aims to give children and young people aged 8-16 who are in care in Staffordshire the opportunity to design and participate in a specific 'children in care games.' The project is a result of a consultation with young people which asked: 'What 2012 meant to them? and 'What type of activities they would like locally? The Games will be organised by Staffordshire County Council in partnership with the Staffordshire Children in Care Council. All sports activities will be run by the relevant National Governing Body, these include Angling, Football, Hockey, Netball, Swimming and Rugby Union. Other activities on the day will include art workshops, dance, music all

provided by local groups.

You don't have to live in London or be a top athlete to take part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  There are hundreds of different ways to get involved in the Games right now.  From joining in Dancing for the Games and Community Games to volunteering and sport, hundreds of thousands of people across the West Midlands are already having their Games and Me experience.  Why don't you get involved too and have your own London 2012 moment?  Find out what's going on in your area and how you can be part of it here .

 Get Set

Bridge School

 

Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme which hosts an online library of a whole range of flexible, interactive learning resources designed to get young people thinking about the Olympic and Paralympic values and the London 2012 Games with games, fact sheets, films, news articles and much more.  Over 80% of schools in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are part of Get Set one of the highest participation rates nationally.

 

Schools that demonstrate a commitment the Olympic and Paralympic values can apply to join the exclusive Get Set Network club giving them access to additional benefits and the opportunity to secure free tickets to the Games through the Ticketshare scheme. Apply to join the Get Set network today and secure your school/college's allocation of London 2012 Ticketshare tickets to the Olympic and Paralympic Games at no cost deadline 16 December 2011.

 

Staffordshire Gets Set for the Games

Staffordshire County Council and Staffordshire University Sports Development have developed an innovative project gaining national recognition. Coaching students have been recruited to a placement within school sport partnerships in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. They will work with schools in each partnership, including primary, secondary and special schools, to develop a new project that is inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics that can form the basis of their application to join the Get Set Network. The placement will aim to increase the number of schools from Staffordshire that have joined the Get Set network whilst supporting the ongoing work and aims of the schools and School Sport Partnerships and developing the students skills and experience in a range of educational settings.

Are you interested in organising an event for your community?  Then why not consider organising a Community Games!

 

Community Games provide a great opportunity for you to bring your community together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The programme provides a toolkit full of ideas and guidance on how to stage your own Community Games, training and support for organisers and free resources such as bunting and posters for you to use to make your event a success.   

 


 

Dancing For The Games

Dancing for the Games is a programme inspired by London 2012 that aims to get people across the West Midlands dancing.  The programme is aimed at inspiring people of all ages, skills and abilities to make dance part of their everyday lives.  Funded by Legacy Trust UK, Arts Council England West Midlands and Advantage West Midlands, Staffordshire County Council in partnership with the Staffordshire Dance Devlopment Group and Stoke-on-Trent City Council have both successfully secured over £90,000 each to deliver a broad and diverse range of dance and dance related activity across the area.

Stoke-on-Trent's World of Dance project is delivering free dance taster workshops or lessons to any community or interest group in the city. Dance styles currently on offer include: Belly Dance, Bhangra, Salsa, Ballroom and Hip Hop/ Street Dance.

 

To date over 5,000 people have taken part in World of Dance activity in numerous settings with workshops held in care homes, Girl Guide groups, U3A groups at community carnivals and after school clubs.
