Moving On
Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are sorry to be saying goodbye to our Business Development Manager, Jason Britton who will be joining the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as Staffordshire Cricket Development Manager in mid-May.
Jason has been with the Partnership since September 2006 and during that time has done some tremendous work on developing our Marketing and Communications plan, performance management and providing funding advice and assistance to a wide range of Partners on grant aid applications.
Jason was also instrumental in ensuring the Partnership's Community Investment Fund portfolio was successfully submitted resulting in many initiative projects receiving funding.
Jason's experience and enthusiasm will be missed by the SASSOT team but we are delighted that his talents will be retained within the Staffordshire sporting community in his new role with the ECB.
Welcome Back
Naomi Bird is due to return from her maternity leave on 12th May. The team look forward to Naomi returning and continuing her role as Marketing and Research Officer.

Local leads identified for Extending Activities project
Local leads have been identified for Extending Activities, an exciting new project aimed at getting more young people involved in community sport.
As outlined in our previous newsletter, ‘Extending Activities’ is funded by the Government and is part of the new ‘Five Hour Offer’ giving all young people the opportunity to do five hours of PE and sport per week (click here for the full article).
Young People can be broadly divided into three categories:
The Extending Activities Workstrand focuses on the 50% of Semi-Sporty young people and aims to get them doing an additional 1-2 hours of community sport per week, by offering new opportunities or by marketing existing opportunities in a different way to ensure they appeal to this group of young people (i.e. by using different venues / methods of delivery etc.)
Extending Activities Delivery Plans are currently being drawn up to access the funding available for the project. Each local area (based on Local Authority boundaries) will be compiling a delivery plan by 9th May. A lead organisation has been identified within each local area to co-ordinate this plan in conjunction with other local partners. The lead organisations and contacts are as follows:
Cannock Chase
East Staffordshire
Newcastle-under-Lyme
If your organisation wants to find out more about getting involved with Extending Activities in your local area, please contact the relevant person above.

The official launch of Stafford Leisure Centre on Saturday 26 April was a resounding success, with the unveiling ceremony, packed programme of events and a visit from European and Commonwealth Swimming Champion Swimmer Adam Whitehead.
A highlight of the day for Apex Swimmers was the visit from European and Commonwealth Swimming Champion Adam Whitehead, who shared his experiences, training tips and swimming techniques with the youngsters, both in and out of the pool.
Pictured above: Adam Whitehead, Sporting Champion, coaching Stafford Apex Swimming Club members.
Adam swam at 5 European Championships (gaining Gold in 1998 and Bronze in 1999 in the 200m breaststroke), 2 Commonwealth Games (winning Gold in 2002 for the 100m breaststroke, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal), 2 World Championships (finishing just outside the medals, in 4th in 1999) and became an Olympian in the year 2000. He represented Great Britain for 10 years and was Commonwealth Games Record holder for the men’s 100 metres Breaststroke.
The new £15 million complex boasts an impressive eight lane 25-metre swimming pool, a teaching pool with state of the art moveable floor, an Easyline gym circuit for gentle workouts housed in its own private studio, a multi-purpose fitness studio, Bodytonic beauty suite and massage, squash courts, a four-court sports hall, a training suite available for a range of courses and room hire, and a crèche facility.
“Carillion is a market leader in construction, especially in the leisure industry and we are proud to have been associated with the construction of this new leisure centre which provides an excellent new facility for the town. The project has been a great success all round and we have worked closely with the Borough Council and the developer Trent City Securities to ensure that the Project was delivered on time and on budget to the high specification and quality required” commented Joy Brooker, Project Manager from Carillion.

Stafford club triumphs at awards
In the 30th anniversary year of Special Olympics Great Britain and the 5th anniversary year of Special Olympics Stafford we are delighted to announce being awarded Sports Club of the Year at yesterdays NPower West Midlands Disability Sports Awards 2008.
This prestigious event was held at Aston Villa Football club and was attended by sporting celebrities such as Sir Trevor Brooking and Doug Ellis.
The club was nominated by Anne George, a Development Officer from Staffordshire, who joined the coaches as part of the awards evening.
She nominated the organisation because she recognised the work of this much needed outlet for young people with learning disabilities outside of school hours.
She acknowledged the improvement of the core skills of agility, balance and co-ordination and the sense of fun and enjoyment within the group which contributed to the overall physical wellbeing of the athletes involved.
Special Olympics Stafford
As part of the larger organisation the Stafford branch sought funding from a variety of organisations which included the National Lottery local businesses alongside a variety of fundraising events.
The Stafford Branch started with 8 young people and now has a role of over 20 young people.
Athletes compete in numerous events which include cross country, football and hockey tournaments and Special Olympics athletics meetings.
Members of the club include English Federation for Disability Sport (EDFS)
After receiving £500 from the ACCESS across Staffordshire fund, Special Olympics Stafford hosted the first West Midlands Sportshall athletics event in December 2007 at Cannock Chase Leisure Centre, involving over 100 athletes.
Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) was established in 1978 as part of the global Special Olympics movement. An accreditation licence is granted annually by Special Olympics International to Special Olympics GB to run the Special Olympics programme in this country.
SOGB is a UK registered charity under Charity No 800329 and is a company limited by guarantee.
Since our formation, we have grown steadily to reach our present position where we have more than 135 groups in England, Scotland and Wales offering 24 sports in our training and competition programme.

Female only boxing tutor course - 25 June 08
The Amateur Boxing Association of England's one day Boxing tutors' course aims to qualify participants to deliver and organise the ABA boxing awards in schools, colleges, universities, youth centres and sports centres. This targeted course aims to provide a female only environment to encourage and increase the number of female boxing tutors.
If you are a female, over 16 years of age and interested in delivering fun, recreational boxing in a variety of settings including schools, colleges, universities, youth centres and sports centres this course is for you. You do not need to be an expert or experienced in boxing.
The Amateur Boxing Association of England aim to increase the number of female boxers. To do this we need to encourage more females to be tutors and coaches. However, the ABA is aware that women may be concerned about doing a tutor / coaching course in a male dominated environment, therefore this course is just for female delegates.
The course is planned for Wednesday 25th June 2008, 8.30am – 4.00pm at Southgate Youth and Community Centre, Derby. Click here for the joining letter and booking form.
If you would like to do this course or require further information please contact: Rebecca Black

Cannock secures funding for important second hockey pitch
Cannock Hockey Club has been awarded £169,834 from Sport England to build a second pitch in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.
The funding announcement follows the news that Cannock Hockey Club was selected as a potential training site for the London 2012 Olympics earlier this month.
The new pitch will be built using the same advanced turf which was used for the newly carpeted main pitch unveiled last Autumn.
The innovative surface is made from extremely durable polyethylene monofilament fibres which are similar to nylon blades but much softer with a wet feel. The pitch surface has been described as the hockey equivalent of Wimbledon’s grass.
Construction of the new second pitch is scheduled for summer and will be available for play at the start of the new season in September.

Clubs and Schools link together
Pupils across the Cheadle area got the chance to meet and try new sports in a unique event held by the Staffordshire Moorlands School Sports Partnership at the new sports hall for Cheadle schools.
The event, which was coordinated by the school sport coordinators from Painsley Catholic High and Cheadle High Schools and sponsored by the Cheadle Community and Learning Partnership, attracted over 400 people who could take part in activities such as climbing, sailing, football, archery, Taekwon-Do and netball over the course of the evening.
Liz Stonier the Partnership Development Manager said “The event was a huge success and hopefully this will encourage more pupils to join local clubs and also local clubs to link with the schools.”
The evening was part of a wider scheme to encourage sports clubs to link with schools in the area in a bid to support schools with their own sports and also to increase the numbers of pupils joining clubs and taking part in sport outside of school.

Leading adventure company to open new course at Cannock Forest
The award-winning Go Ape High Wire Forest Adventure is set to open a new course at Cannock Forest, Staffordshire on Friday 23 May. Based on a similar design to the sixteen UK-wide courses, Go Ape at Cannock Forest will offer people of all ages the opportunity to live life more adventurously and experience the Go Ape wow factor.
Be part of a growing tribe of over 850,000 adventure seekers and experience the thrills of trekking from tree-to-tree, some 40ft above the forest floor. Go Ape is a totally new type of mental and physical challenge, which is acclaimed for its confidence building and risk management skills. The seventeen UK-wide courses are accessible to anyone who can climb a rope ladder, not just the super fit.
The proposed course will be split into 5 separate sections, linked together by natural footpaths. Each section begins with a rope ladder climb into the treetops, where an assortment of spectacular obstacles and Tarzan swings lead to an exhilarating zip slide, bringing you down to the forest floor. Go Ape at Cannock Forest will have 2 fantastic zip slides, each reaching a length of over 250m. The first at section 3 flies over a valley into another separate forest area where visitors will complete section 4. The second long zip will bring you back to the original location to complete the rest of the course. Set within the stunning forest surroundings, this unique outdoor activity provides approximately three hours of adrenalin-fuelled fun and adventure for everyone from families to corporate.
Go Ape High Wire Forest Adventure was established in 2002 by husband and wife team Tristram and Rebecca Mayhew. Six years on, Go Ape High Wire Forest Adventure courses are now located in seventeen forests across the UK, stretching from the south coast to Scottish highlands. The young company has plans to open 40 courses by 2012. The inspiration for creating Go Ape came from a family holiday to France when Tristram and Rebecca came across a similar high wire adventure course deep in the Auvergne National Forest. They watched a family swinging through the tree canopy. Sure the teenage kids were having a grand time of it, but it was the look of ‘we haven’t had this much fun in years’ on their parents’ faces that convinced them instantly that they should be doing this in the UK.
Winning a stream of tourism awards over the past 2 years, Tristram Mayhew, co-founder and Chief Gorilla, nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year at The National Business Awards, 2006, says. “Creating adventures and encouraging others to live life more adventurously is the ethos behind Go Ape. It’s very much about introducing people, young and old, to the forest and being able to explore the forest from a different perspective.”
Minimum age 10 years, minimum height 1.4m (4ft 7in) and maximum weight of 20.5 stone. Under 18 year olds must be accompanied by a participating adult. One adult can supervise either up to two children (where one or both is under 16) or up to five 16-17 year olds. Prices: Gorillas (18yrs+) £25.00, Baboons (10-17yrs) £20.00.

Awards recognise Special School's sporting successes
Pupils and teachers at a special school are celebrating a double success at a major sports ceremony.
Cicely Haughton Special School’s football team was named Lafarge Cement team of the year at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s Sports Awards on 25 April. The Wetley Rocks-based school has 50 pupils and only 18 of the correct age range for the team, yet the side was named joint champion of the Cheadle and District Sports Association League last season. Prior to entering the school, few pupils had ever represented their previous schools at any sport. And team boss Jason Bould, of Leek, was named coach of the year at the awards. As well as coaching children with significant behavioural, social and learning difficulties, Jason studied and funded a coaching qualification in his own time. He also helped the school secure an Active Sportsmark award and often takes the pupils home after matches, who live up to 25 miles away. His role has improved the children’s self-esteem and confidence.
The ceremony took place at Whiston Village Hall in front of around 150 civic dignitaries and invited guests. The awards recognise sporting achievements over the last 12 months. They were given after a rigorous nomination and judging process which started last November and saw sports councils in Biddulph, Cheadle and Leek highlight local achievers.
Race organiser Glen Marriott won the Alan Hurst special achievement accolade, in recognition of his volunteering work in arranging the English Cross Country Association Championships at Alton Towers. He also arranged over 13 club races for 4,000 runners.
Tean Valley netball treasurer Sue Plant was Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent volunteer of the year. The award recognises her work including affiliating over 100 players, banking training and match fees and paying league fees for over 10 years. Sue has helped to access grant aid from the Cheadle and District Sports Council and from the ‘Give it Sum’ foundation.
Pictured above: Mark Thornewill, SASSOT Partnership Director presenting Sue Plant
Fourteen-year-old swimmer Eleanor Jones was named junior achiever of the year. In the last 12 months Eleanor, from Biddulph, has achieved a string of successes including qualifying for the British championships, winning silver and bronze at the northern district age group championships and winning five gold medals at the Staffordshire county championships. Her training schedule sees her travel to Stockport before and after school, and complete two-hour swimming sessions and 30-minute land training. Eleanor is also a member of the British Water Polo Girls Academy and is a gold medalist in the north Midlands for biathlon.
Biddulph High School and Specialist Sports College was Alton Towers sporting school of the year. The school’s athletics, rounders, cross-country, badminton, netball, football, basketball and swimming teams landed a combined 22 titles in the last year. The school also achieved sports college re-designation, FA Charter standard, Sportsmark and Health Schools awards. A total of 75 students are studying for either level one or level two sports leaders qualifications to host tournaments, and teachers, who are encouraged to develop their own coaching skills, are studying in areas including junior football leaders, trampolining, dance, cheerleading, kayaking and rugby.
Stacey Weatherer, from Brindley Ford, was Ted Perry senior achiever of the year. The martial arts expert was twice named world champion and achieved a third degree blackbelt in taekwondo and second degree blackbelt in kickboxing. In competitions, she was also named Scottish champion for the fourth year running in Glasgow in October, and won gold and silver at the British championships in Swindon in November.
Councillor Mark Deaville, cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture, said: “Year-on-year these awards continue to recognise outstanding sporting achievements and commitments.
“We’re fully dedicated to giving our sporting stars all the support we can and recognise efforts from grass roots level, to unsung heroes to national and international performers.
“We have a great range of talent across a whole spectrum of disciplines and I am thrilled that we have been able to honour so many achievers.
“The sports awards are a calendar fixture and continue to attract a huge interest across the district. The awards will continue to ensure our sporting stars get the recognition they deserve.”
Major event and team award sponsor Lafarge Cement was represented at the awards ceremony by Cauldon Works manager Nicolas Maes and some of his team. He said: “Although part of a giant global organisation, Lafarge remains firmly committed to supporting the communities around its operations. As part of the programme of support we offer from Cauldon Works, we are pleased that we have been able to sponsor the sports awards for many years. These awards bring together the finest local talent in a variety of sporting arenas – we are very impressed with what we have seen here and we congratulate all the award winners and runners-up.”

Dance to receive a £5.5 million boost
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Andy Burnham, has announced that dance is to receive an additional £5.5 million of government funding. The funding announcement was delivered alongside the publication of a review of youth dance by Royal Opera House Chief Executive Tony Hall.
The government has stated that the new investment, plus a support structure, will boost dance opportunities for young people - both in school and out of school hours. It will fund a new organisation, Youth Dance England, which is charged and funded to develop a national youth dance strategy across both school and youth dance sectors and will fund the pilot of dance co-ordinators in schools supporting the provision of dance – both as an art form and within school sport.
‘Aiming High Implementation Plan’, a ten year strategy for positive activities for young people
Aiming High for Young People: A Ten Year Strategy for Positive Activities was published in July 2007 and set out the Government’s long-term vision for improved services and opportunities for young people. The Government commitment to realising this vision was underlined by new proposals for investment and further reform of young people’s services in the Children’s Plan, published in December 2007.
The ‘Aiming High Implementation Plan’ sets out arrangements for implementing Aiming High and highlights progress to date, as well as the key actions which will be taken over the next 12 months. It is intended to be of use to all agencies and professionals working to improve outcomes for young people and will be a live document, updated regularly to reflect progress and new developments. Local authorities working through their children’s trusts are responsible for improving outcomes for young people and are under a legal duty to secure young people’s access to positive activities.
Aiming High cites sports partners as important contributors to the effective achievement of its objectives.
Government intensifies drive to tackle antisocial behaviour in young people
Aiming High will be supported by The Youth Taskforce Action plan which was launched by The Secretary of State for Children, School and Families, the Rt Hon Ed Balls MP. The Youth Taskforce Action Plan will have a budget of £218.5 million to enable tough enforcement where behaviour is unacceptable or illegal, non-negotiable support to address the underlying causes of poor behaviour and better prevention to tackle problems before they become serious and entrenched, and to prevent problems arising in the first place. This will support 2 key areas of Aiming High: to improve the offer of ‘places to go’ for young people and to increase young people’s participation in positive activities in 50 of the most deprived areas.
The Action Plan will focus on getting young people into positive activities by fast tracking almost £23m through the Youth Capital Fund. This will help get improved facilities opened quickly in the most disadvantaged areas where teenagers are most at risk of getting into trouble and have fewest opportunities to get involved in activities like sport and arts.
The full report is available online here.

The Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, the Rt Hon Ed Balls MP, has outlined the next stage in the implementation of the Children’s Plan, published earlier this year. The new announcement will see investment into a range of areas, including play, youth facilities and the Children’s workforce. Specific funding packages for the workforce include £73m to improve the training, recruitment and
development of social workers and £7.5m for the play workforce to improve the training of a further 4,000 workers. The Government has also announced the introduction of a new ‘Expert Group’ to work alongside the departments to develop a personalised and integrated approach to the workforce.

“All across the country young people are calling for more great places to go where they have new and interesting things to do, that offer a real alternative to the ‘street corner’ culture. We’ve put the money in place; now Local Authorities must act and work with young people to make the most of this fantastic opportunity. That is why today’s announcement is so important not only for young people but for everyone in the community.” For further information please see here.
