National Hockey finals - Cannock u16s and u18s |
Cannock u18s are National Champions
Cannock Hockey Club are delighted with the success of two of their junior teams - winning the U18 national club championships and finishing a very narrow second, on goal difference, in the U16 national club championships. Success at this outdoor competition follows both teams' qualification at the National Indoor finals in January 2010.
The finals weekend was hosted at Cannock, - their two excellent water based pitches and wonderful club facilities proved an ideal venue for such a large competition. Home advantage with strong, vocal club support was a huge asset to the lads over the two day competition. They would all like to pass on their thanks to everyone who supported them and helped to make the weekend such a success.
This has been a knock out competition with the U16s reaching the final four, storming to the finals :
11 - 0 Coventry and North Warks 14 - 0 Shrewsbury 5 - 2 Bridgnorth 10 - 2 Sheffield
The U18's have had similar success, reaching the final four by defeating last year's winners, Southampton, in a tense match eventually
Under 16's Final Results: Drew in a tense match against Beeston, Nottingham 4-4. Drew 1 - 1 against Taunton Vale - just conceding the goal in the last 5 minutes. Won 3 - 2 against Bromley and Beckenham, last year's winners of the U15 Cup.
This Cannock team finished runners up last year to Bromley and Beckenham and were second to them in the plate finals in 2008, and while they were all disappointed at finishing as runners up were justly proud to have beaten Bromley and Beckenham this year. The eventual winners on goal difference were Beeston.
A fantastic team performance and a personal achievement for their coach Will Fleet as the youngest coach in the whole competition at 19.
The U18s triumphed against the odds to defeat Beeston in the final match of the tournament, producing a fantastic team performance showing true grit, determination and skill. Other teams in this age group included Stourport and Old Loughtonians from Essex. Beeston were runners up in a reversal of the U16 result - underlining the strength of hockey competition in the Midlands.
