Disability Multi-Sports Success in Staffordshire
Staffordshire FA and Staffordshire Cricket in partnership with Aiming High have held 2 more successful multi skills holiday courses for children with disabilities.
The courses were held at Shobnall Leisure Complex in Burton and Knutton Recreation Centre, Newcastle under Lyme from 10.30am – 1.30pm and attracted a whole host of children with differing impairments to learn new sporting skills along with furthering their social development. The holiday course gave the children the chance to experience 2 of the most popular sports in the world with local exit routes available within Staffordshire.
The days began with football and lots of fun filled games looking to improve on basic techniques such as ball control, passing, dribbling and spatial awareness. The group then moved onto a penalty shoot out before putting all the skills learnt previously to good practice in a small sided game.
There will be more of these courses delivered over future school holidays so for more information or to be added to our database please contact Jamie Leaning at the Staffordshire FA on 01785 256994, 07816536446 or jamie.leaning@staffordshirefa.com
Caudwell benefit from Staffordshire FA ‘Ability Counts Awareness Programme’
Children from across Stoke-on-Trent took to the pitch thanks to specialist training sessions from The Football Association.
More than 20 youngsters who have benefitted from Stoke-based charity, Caudwell Children, got to learn top tips from the Staffordshire FA’s Disability Coach as part of a special football experience included in The FA’s ‘Ability Counts awareness programme.’
Coach, Jamie Leaning who led the sessions at Powerleague, Stoke, said “These sessions help youngsters learn new skills whilst having fun.
Being part of a team helps to promote confidence and the feedback from the kids and parents is always very positive.
Moving forward we are looking at working with Caudwell Children more closely and offering the chance for more of their beneficiaries to take part in the training sessions as well as other football related activities.”
Caudwell Children, who are Stoke City FC’s Charity of the Year for the current season, are committed to changing the lives of children by providing specialist equipment, treatment and therapy as well as its annual Destination Dreams holiday and family support services.
Trudi Beswick, Chief Executive for Caudwell Children, said “Inclusion is something we are pro-active in promoting and we are thrilled to be able to offer such a great experience to sick and disabled children in the local community.
We are now hoping to make the sessions a regular feature so that we can offer the experience to more beneficiaries across the area.
We would like to thank the team at The Staffordshire FA for their efforts and for helping us provide such a fantastic opportunity for these youngsters,”
To date Caudwell Children has provided services worth over £13 million to thousands of children with 350 different medical conditions.

Ability Counts Awareness Programme 2010
Staffordshire Football Association, with support from Stoke City FC, held their annual Ability Counts Awareness Campaign from Tuesday 5th April through to Friday 15th April.
Over 100 children with disabilities and impairments from Schools in the County have benefitted throughout the awareness campaign.
Schools have taken part in a number of events including a Special Schools Tournament for boys and girls and the Staffordshire Playground 2 Podium County Athlete Assessment Day for children in mainstream education with a disability or impairment.
Other schools received a free ‘access all areas’ tour of The Britannia Stadium including the managerial football lounge, home team dressing room and a chance to go pitch side. The highlights were a visit to the Jimmy Greenhoff Suite which hosts the trophy cabinet that will be hoping to hold The FA Cup after this season’s final and the tour came to an end in the Stanley Matthews Lounge, a suite dedicated to the Stoke City and England legend.
Other activities during the half term break have included joint football and cricket holiday courses that are funded through Staffordshire County Council’s ‘Aiming High’ project and sessions delivered specifically to those families that benefit from Caudwell Children’s charity who are Stoke City’s main charity for 2010/2011.
The campaign is held annually to raise awareness and to promote disability football as well as offering people a chance to experience a football environment at close hand.
The Ability Counts Awareness Programme’s main event will be tonight’s re-arranged Barclays Premier League fixture between Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. On the Scoreboard before the game the crowd we will be treated to Aynsley Special School using British Sign Language to sign the words to the famous terrace anthem ‘Delilah’ Half time of the main event will see the Staffordshire FA’s Disability Centre of Excellence u14 and u18’s squads give an on pitch demonstration of the skills they have developed over this season.
Jamie Leaning, Staffordshire FA’s Disability Coach said “The campaign is devoted to giving people an insight into disability football opportunities within the county and also what Stoke City as a club can offer. Many people with disabilities are sceptical about getting into sport for a variety of reasons. Some may be in education or in an environment that is not able to offer support for their personal needs so may miss out so this event is perfect to highlight the available opportunities.”
