Holy Rosary win district tag finals
Burton Rugby Football Club played host to the East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership District Tag Rugby Finals. The event, on 6 April 2011 brought together teams from a Burton Schools Tag Rugby Festival and the Dove Valley Tag Rugby Festival to compete to become District Champions and progress to the Staffordshire County finals in May.
The schools who took part were St Modwen's, All Saints (Alrewas), Holy Rosary, Rykneld, John of Rolleston and Oldfields. Teams of 12 boys and girls in years 5 and 6 took part on the day.
The sun shone brightly on the day leading to a high standard of running tag rugby by those involved. It was a close fought contest between all of the schools with some exceptionally talented young players on show. The event saw Holy Rosary and St Modwen's tied on points but with a higher number of tries scored, Holy Rosary were crowned District Champions. Both teams now get the chance to test their skills against schools from throughout
Staffordshire at the County Finals which will be held at Lichfield Rugby Club on the 21 May.
The event would not have taken place without the support of Burton Rugby Football Club who provided the facility and referees for the games. Burton College were also actively involved in the event, providing students who helped score and organise the events. East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership Development Manager Caroline Smith said; “This was a great event with all the teams involved very close in standard. A high
standard of performance was on offer and I am sure the teams will do well at the County Finals. The event was made all the better for the support of the Rugby Football Union Development Officer, Burton Rugby Club and Burton College Students and would not have been possible without their support”.
