Developing a satisfaction measure for the quality of the sporting experience The Sport England Research Team, in consultation with National Governing Bodies of Sport, is developing a survey tool which will measure participants satisfaction with the quality of the sporting experience. This is one of the key themes of Sport England's recently published strategy for 2008-2011. The strategy commits Sport England to deliver on a series of demanding targets, one of which is a measurable increase in people's satisfaction with their experience of sport. The scope and associated methodology of the survey is currently being designed, and it is envisaged it will track satisfaction at varying levels of engagement in each sport - among 'informal' participants, affiliated club members, and the talent pool. The survey will be an online panel of participants and will be conducted annually, with the baseline collected by April 2009. Different 'domains' or areas of satisfaction will be measured, to include: value for money, performance, social/belonging, facilities and playing environment, logistics/organisation, diversion/release, exertion & fitness, officiating and coaching.

Sport and Obesity - Secretary of State calls for national movement to tackle obesity
In a major speech to the Fabian Society at Westminster Central Hall, the Health Secretary Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP outlined the public health implications of the obesity epidemic. Earlier this year the government published the 'Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives' strategy to tackle obesity, and committed a £75million budget to communicating the seriousness of this issue to at-risk citizens.
In his speech, Alan Johnson pointed to the danger of the present generation’s children living shorter lives than their parents and argued that the problem could only be tackled through a broad partnership involving families, employers, retailers, the leisure industry, the media, local government and the voluntary sector. Highlighting the need to launch a national movement that would make people more aware of their unhealthy lifestyles and also encourage them to change their ways of living he said:
"This national movement for change will enable every citizen in the country at every stage of their lives to get the encouragement and support they need to be healthy - from what they see on the television, to what they buy in the local supermarket, to the resources at their disposal in the local community, to how they travel to and from work or school, to the information and advice they get from health professionals. We are calling on everyone - from the smallest community keep fit class to the biggest retailers in the land - to join in this campaign to change the way we live our lives."

The teams are composed of players from up to five different sight categories B1, low partial, B2, B3 and B4. B1 is totally blind and the sight categories then move upwards in levels of sight. Each sight category is subject to different rules and compensations in order to make the playing field as level as possible. For example, a B1 player receives two bounce bowling and is allowed to catch opposing batsmen out one bounce. B1 players also have to bowl around a third of their side’s overs and each team must field at least three B1 players. View more information on the British Blind Sport website
