Young people from across the county came together at Northwood Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent for the first Staffordshire StreetGames Festival. The day included small sided competitions and a wide variety of activities that young people could ‘come and try’ on the day. The main event sponsors were Advantage West Midlands, StreetGames and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
Young individual enjoying the 'come and try' street dance session The first Staffordshire StreetGames Festival took place at Northwood Stadium on 31st July 2008 and attracted hundreds of young people from across the county. The event combined 5-a-side football and 3-on-3 basketball competitions with a wide variety of other activities including a climbing wall, gladiator duel and sumo wrestling, BMX and skate park, ultimate frisbee, archery, trampolining, martial arts, street dance and graffiti art.
Diane Modahl (former 800m Commonwealth champion) attended the event and gave advice to young athlete’s that were taking part in the 100m sprint competition and presented the winners and runners up with their awards.
Diane Modahl, former 800m Commonwealth Champion, coaching some of the young people on the day StreetGames is a national charity that promotes sport in disadvantaged communities, and delivers sport and dance to young people “where they want it, at times when they want it and in a style they want”. The aims of the charity are to get more youngsters in deprived areas playing sport, to spread skills and knowledge so other sports workers learn how to involve these youngsters, to advocate greater investment in disadvantaged communities through sport, to support agencies interested in using sport for renewal aims and to improve the quality of sports delivery in renewal areas.
