Celebrating women's sporting success
Nominations are now open for The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards 2009 - a celebration of female sporting success, from elite sportswomen to rising stars and those working behind the scenes.
The awards, now in their 22nd year, are among the most prestigious and influential in the British sporting calendar - and are sponsored by Sport England, UK Sport and CCPR.

A grassroots sporting legacy from the 2012 Games
Three years out from the London 2012 Games, sports are working hard to capitalise on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get more people playing and enjoying sport.
The 46 NGBs benefiting from £480 million of Sport England investment are putting in place the building blocks to achieve ambitious sport-by-sport targets.
For swimming that includes a number of initiatives, including beacon clubs, a national volunteering recognition scheme - and the Government's free swimming initiative. In the first three months of the scheme, youngsters and older people have taken the plunge over 4.4 million times.

2012 to make history as first gender equality Games
Sport England has welcomed the IOC's recommendation that women's boxing should be part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games programme. This means that London 2012 will make history as the first Games to have representation by men and women in every sport.

Funding programmes generate huge response
Applications for grants from two of Sport England's new funding programmes, the Rural Communities themed round and the Innovation Fund, are now being assessed. Both funds were substantially oversubscribed and all eligible applications are being judged on a competitive basis.
The level of response means that we are able to invest in the very best ideas. It gives us a real opportunity for rigorous assessment - ensuring we support projects that will deliver the greatest possible return for community sport.
