Women's Rugby World Cup
August 20th to Sept 5th will see the Women’s Rugby World Cup take place in Guildford, Surrey, with the Final taking place at the Stoop. By the time of reading this, we are hoping that England will have been victorious! Nevertheless, the World Cup will have seen 13 games televised Live on Sky and we will have seen 3 Staffordshire girls in action! Sarah Beale, Sarah Hunter, Emily Scarratt and Roz Crowley all play their rugby at Lichfield Rugby Club in Staffs and have been preparing for this event for the past couple of weeks in World Cup Camps in Loughborough, Wellington and Surrey Sports Park.

Club Development at Brinsford Prison
From the 9th-20th of August Staffordshire’s RFU Community Rugby Coaching team have lead a highly successful rugby project at HMP & YOI Brinsford. The project targeted inmates aged 18-21 who had very little previous experience of playing rugby and is in preparation for the prison’s second season in the Staffordshire Merit League.
The project built upon a ‘Try for Life’ programme that ran for 8 weeks in the prison in 2009. This lead to Brinsford entering the Staffordshire merit league for the first time for the 2009-2010 season, where the team finished in a very respectable 3rd place. Very few of the inmates from the original programme remain at the prison due to movement between institutions, so the team of George Glenn, Matt Wooldridge, Simon Jones and Simon Hincks have lead sessions covering basic game play, tackling, passing and unit play.
The response from the inmates has been fantastic, with around 18 participating for 2 hours every weekday morning. A particular highlight being the contact sessions which are always keenly contested! The team have also pushed the ‘This is Rugby’ core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship both on and off the field, and a real team ethic has started to develop.
The project has also provided the coaching team with a new challenge and all have expressed their enjoyment at being involved in the prison.

Rugby Summer Camp Fun
The Community Rugby Coaching team in Staffordshire have been running high quality rugby camps throughout the year, following successful 2&3 day camps at Burntwood, Uttoxeter, Stoke and Burton rugby clubs earlier in the year, the team have just completed comprehensive 5 day camps at Tamworth, Wolverhampton and Leek RFCs. Around 250 Children have benefited by attending these course and with still 2 camps left to run it is hoped that many more will take advantage and book on to the remaining camps at Trentham and Lichfield RFC.
All areas of the game are covered with specialist sessions done on Body Positioning, Kicking and Passing, the players enjoy a series of conditioned games where the skills learnt are tested in game situations.
The camps have been well received and supported by the clubs, with not only experienced players attending but also non rugby playing Children giving it a try for the first time.
The week concludes with a skills based time trail where all players are given the opportunity to use the techniques coached during the week, and with every player receiving an RFU goodie bad and certificate all the Children leave with a smile on their faces.
The final two camps are being held 23rd – 27th August at Trentham RFC and 31st Aug–3rd Sept at Lichfield RFC and should you wish to book a place please contact the Community Rugby Coach, Simon Hincks 07912 541471 or email simonhincks@therfu.com.
