Staffordshire Moorlands District Council

2008 Special Schools Sports Festival

The date and venue for the 2008 Special Schools Sports Festival has been confirmed for Wednesday 2nd July at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton upon Trent.

The date was chosen so that it ties in with the Youth Sport Trust’s National School Sport week, which starts on Monday 30th June 2008. Dame Kelly Holmes, the National School Sport Champion, is championing this week
.

The Special Schools Sports festival organised by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) continues to go from strength to strength and will be in its seventh year in 2008.

Last year over 240 pupils from 11 of the county’s Special Schools participated and we are hoping to build on this for the 2008 event.

On the day, pupils took part in coaching sessions and mini competitions in variety of sports, which will be confirmed in early 2008.

This year we hope to be able to follow up the event with the provision of coaching in some of the special schools to build upon the interest generated at the festival and hopefully work with sports clubs to develop pathways for pupils to continue to participate in sport outside the school environment.

To aid this transition from school to community and as part of SASSOT’s Equity Plan we will also be producing a
Disability Sports Directory.

Further details will be circulated shortly, but for all queries please contact:
