Ruth Holdway - a true inspiration
You may or may not already be aware of the sad news that Ruth Holdway, of Stone Road, Trentham, died on 29 November as a result of a tragic accident whilst on a family walking holiday .
Ruth helped introduce hundreds of youngsters, including many disabled children, to canoeing as a community sports coach at both Trentham and Stafford and Stone Canoe Club.
She work tirelessly to ensure that Trentham Watersports Association achieved their ambition to develop a new club house which was officially opened in September 2009.
She was an inspiration to the canoe world and will be sadly missed by all. Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent extend their sympathy to her family and friends.

Sport England Funding for West Midlands Regional Coach Mentoring Programme
The West Midlands Regional Coach Mentoring programme has recently been awarded £7,798 to
After the success of the 2008 West Midlands Regional Coach Mentoring Programme, the West Midland FA Girls' and Women’s Football Development Officers and the FA were keen to continue the work that had taken place to support 15 female football coaches to achieve their FA Level 2.
The programme, which is supported by national and regional FA staff, County FA Football Development teams and local Charter Standard Clubs, aims to identify coach mentees from the 5 Counties within the West Midlands who are looking to gain additional support and guidance with completing the course. Each coach mentee is assigned a mentor who works with them along every step of the journey to completing the Level 2 course.
The programme starts around 6 months in advance of the Level 2 course taking place, providing workshops, meetings and support within the coach’s club to help work toward the course to ensure the coach is confident and as fully prepared as possible in preparation for the course. Once the training part of the course is completed, the coach then continues to receive support every step of the way through to completing the course assessments.
With the gaining of the funding from Sport England, this will enable the West Midland County FA’s to deliver a comprehensive programme to support around 20 female coaches to complete their FA Level 2 throughout 2010.
Further information with regards to the programme will be available over the coming weeks, with details on how to apply to be a part of the programme and the relevant application forms for coaches and coach mentors soon to be released.
Should you require any details about the programme or to register your interest in Staffordshire, please contact Kevin Staples at the Staffordshire FA or visit www.staffordshirefa.com

Staffordshire Cricket News
Danielle Wyatt the Staffordshire womens star has been picked by England for the forthcoming tour to India in February and March.
Danielle who is justifiably proud of her achievement said 'I am just so excited and determined to work hard before I go to be in the best possible condition for the tour'.
Staffordshire head coach Alan Hill commented: 'We as a county are thrilled for Danielle, she has worked hard for her chance and I hope she does fantastically well on the tour'. Hill added: 'This is a great honour for Danielle, I am very pleased for her'.
The news comes only two days after Danielle hit her maiden hundred while on a five week trip to Australia. Joining fellow Staffordshire star Georgia Elwiss at Northern Districts, Danielle scored 100 not out against Sydney on Sunday. The club play in the strong Sydney women's first grade competition.
The full ECB media release is as follows :
The England women's selectors have named a 15-strong squad to tour India from February 15 to March 9. Led by Charlotte Edwards, the squad will play five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches. Danielle Wyatt, an 18-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, has been selected for what will be her debut tour.
The promising off-spinner, who has previously represented the England Women's Academy, has been called up to replace Holly Colvin who is currently studying Natural Sciences at Durham University and is unable to tour because of her academic commitments.
Claire Taylor, who is taking a six-month break from international cricket, is also unavailable for selection but will be resuming training in February in preparation for the ICC World Twenty20 in April.
Clare Connor, ECB head of women's cricket, said: “The team has had an outstanding year in 2009 but attentions have already turned to what will be a challenging year in 2010."
“The tour to India will be a real test for the squad and without Claire Taylor and Holly Colvin there are opportunities for other squad members to stake a claim for a place in the side and prove that they are match winners ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 in April and the series against New Zealand this summer."
“It is a demanding place to play cricket and the fact that no squad member has ever won a series in India proves just what a challenge the three weeks will be."
“The girls will be determined to change their losing record in India and come back with wins in both the one-day and Twenty20 series”
Mike Gatting pictured with England Indoor and Staffordshire Player Kate Dicken

Chris Guest from Staffordshire Cricket, who played for England at the recent world cup in Brisbane Australia, is heading up the programme for the county.
Chris has organised a junior league for 2010 and hopes that with no 'Rain Stopped Play' around that clubs will use it as a viable way to teaching new skills in the game.
Chris can be contacted by e mail c.guest@staffordshirecricket.co.uk
Staffordshire Cricket Development Manager, Jason Britton, said "We are really excited about this format of the game and believe it to be a more accesible, fast and dynamic opportunity for people from any background or ability to get involved in the game. Staffordshire Cricket is piloting this new way of playing the game through its local club network". Staffordshire Development Coach Rose Davies "Gets to Grips" with Draycott Racquets and Fitness Centre
Rose Davies, the Staffordshire Development Coach for England Squash & Racketball, is working hard to progress both the junior and adult sectors within our two sports across the county. Here is an insight to some of the work she is currently carrying out and what she is planning for the New Year.
With the ongoing development plans for Racketball in Staffordshire, Rose Davies who is the England Squash & Racketball Development Coach for the county, is currently working with Draycott Racquets and Fitness Centre to try to increase participation for both juniors and adults, in the Racketball domain.
Although a small amount of Racketball is already played within the facility, Rose hopes that with the introduction of some beginner classes (including female groups), the popularity of the sport will increase and build on the platform of interest already held at the centre.
In addition, Rose is liaising with local primary schools and offering free Mini Squash taster sessions, for children aged 5 to 11 years, in the new year. This exciting activity fits the needs of younger children by offering an ideal introduction to the game of squash using brightly coloured equipment to provide a vibrant programme, which is both educational and fun. Rose hopes that this will boost the current number of juniors across the county and help coaching staff to progress with the development of their junior players.

U16 Boys St Peter's overcame tough opponents to beat Walton High in the final of this year’s County Finals. De Ferrers the defending champions where beaten in the group stages by St Peter’s who went on to win the title after a 3 year dry spell.
Local club players representing their school were well represented with St Peter's fielding 3 of their 4 players who play at Penkhull TTC, De Ferrers fielding 2 players who play at Uxbridge TTC.
U13 Boys De Ferrers High School and Clayton Hall Business and Language showed their dominance in their group stages and met in the final. Clayton who were runners up in 2008 and 2007, had to again settle for runner up spot as De Ferrers ran out 6-2 winners and take the County title. Again both schools were well represented as a result of close club school links in Uxbridge TTC and Clayton Hall TTC.

Stafford Half Marathon
Over 1,000 have signed up for Stafford Half Marathon
The Stafford Half Marathon capacity has exceeded its halfway point as over 1,000 runners have signed up for the event, which takes place on Sunday 21 March 2010.
With less than 1,000 places available, race organisers are urging runners to register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, as entries are available on a first come first served basis.
For the first time, runners are able to register at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre – in person at the Eastgate Street venue or by telephoning 01785 254 653. Online entries are available at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/halfmarathon via ‘Real Buzz Run Britain’. Printed entry forms for the hugely popular race will not be available for the 2010 event, as the council moves to a more environmentally friendly paperless entry system.
The closing date for entries is Friday 5 February 2010 – or when the 2000 runner limit has been reached.
Former half marathon competitor and cabinet member for leisure, Councillor Mike Smith commented, “This event just keeps getting more popular and is now rightly seen as one of the top races in the county’s sporting calendar. And I would urge all those who want to take part in the 2010 Stafford Half Marathon to get their entries in quickly as the places have been filling up at a remarkable rate since registration opened in November – last week alone saw 121 entries.”
The 2010 Half Marathon will start in Stafford Street (town centre) at 10.30am. The route will head off from the town centre into Stafford’s surrounding countryside on traffic-controlled roads, incorporating two steady climbs before returning to the Market Square via Victoria Park.
Crowds line the route to cheer on the diverse field of athletes and help them enjoy the thrill of the race. Local community groups, bands, school children and anyone else are encouraged to get involved and offer support to the runners along the course.
Although 13.1 miles may seem a long way, it is an achievable personal challenge if participants are able to commit to a progressive training programme. Runners training programmes, tips and a weekly training diary are available at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/halfmarathon.
For 2010 all Half Marathon participants will receive medals and t-shirts and other prizes are awarded for open and vet categories.
Also on Sunday 21 March as part of the Half Marathon event day programme Handcyclists will take to the Half Marathon route and the School and Family Fun Run will fill the town centre with fun and fancy dress.

Christmas comes early to Wolstanton High School
Newcastle under Lyme SSP held their first ever
Christmas came early to Wolstanton High School when they were victorious in both the boys and girls year 7 Partnership Futsal Championships.
Taking part in the first ever event, to be run in Newcastle and the first of its kind to be held at Keele University, Wolstanton brushed aside all their opponents to come out top at both events.
On Tuesday 8th December 2009, seven schools from across the partnership took part in the boys event. Maryhill, Clough Hall, Wolstanton, Madeley, St John Fisher, Sir Thomas Boughey and Chesterton competed in a fast, action packed event. The final was between St John Fisher and Wolstanton. A tight close game was won 2-0 by Wolstanton and they went forward to the county finals.
Wolstanton’s Year 7 winning Futsal Team at Keele University 8/12/09
On Thursday 10th December, the girls' event ran with five schools taking part: Clough Hall, Wolstanton, St John Fisher, Madeley and Sir Thomas Boughey. The majority of the girls were having their first taste of Futsal and there were some very high scoring games in the opening exchanges. A sense of deja vu hit us all as the final games saw two front runners in St John Fisher and Wolstanton leading the way. It was to be Wolstanton's night again when they won their last game to match the boys and win the competition and go through to the county finals.
Gareth Thomas from Staffordshire FA said “Working in partnership with the Competition Managers across Staffordshire, we want to give all secondary schools in the County the opportunity of learning more about the game of Futsal, and also provide them with exciting exit routes in the form of District, County, Regional and National Futsal Competitions. The FA believe that Futsal can make a contribution to the technical development of young players, and many Countries that we admire for the technical skills of their players use Futsal as an aspect of youth development. Ball retention, quick and skilful play, and tactical awareness, are all key skills within the game of Futsal”.
“The two district competitions organised by Andy Moon for the secondary schools in Newcastle, proved to be an excellent opportunity for boys & girls in year 7 to develop these skills, and it was great to see how much the children seemed to enjoy this format of the game. We hope that their teachers have also enjoyed delivering Futsal within their respective schools during this initiative, and we’ll certainly look to repeat the success of these competitions by working in partnership with Andy and the other Competition Managers in the future”.

Futsal Fever hits the Moorlands
Staffordshire Moorlands SSP held their first ever Futsal Championships. There was a Year 7 boys and Year 7 Girls Competition.
On Monday 30th November and Tuesday 1st December 2009 at South Moorlands Leisure Centre, Staffordshire Moorlands SSP held their inaugural Year 7 Futsal Championship.
The competition feeds directly into Staffordshire FAs brand new county competition on 4th and 11th February 2010 at Chase Leisure Centre.
In the boys event there were four schools competing for the honour of representing the Moorlands in February. Painsley, Cheadle High, St Edwards and Blythe Bridge took part in a round robin tournament with some fantastic South American styled football skills on show. The players took to the game instantly and with two pitches, goals and Staffordshire FA referees overseeing the competition and supported by young leaders from Painsley the event was a huge success. The competition went down to the final game and Cheadle High beat Painsley by the odd goal in 5 (3-2) to win the tournament and go through to the County Finals!
The following night saw the girls event take place, which was supported by Painsley, Blythe Bridge and two teams from St Edwards Junior High. Again the event was well received and the girls enjoyed the contest. St Edwards A team were the eventual winners and will go through to represent the county at Chase Leisure Centre in February.
It was very pleasing to see the event run so well as 99% of the participants told me before the event they had never played a competitive Futsal match before. It gives us lots of positive feedback for Futsal and something I am very keen to build on in the next 12 months.
“The two district competitions organised by Andy Moon for the secondary schools in Staffordshire Moorlands, proved to be an excellent opportunity for boys & girls in year 7 to develop these skills, and it was great to see how much the children seemed to enjoy this format of the game. We hope that their teachers have also enjoyed delivering Futsal within their respective schools during this initiative, and we’ll certainly look to repeat the success of these competitions by working in partnership with Andy and the other Competition Managers in the future”.

Young people lead to success
Around 30 young leaders from Chase Terrace Technology College and Chasetown Specialist Sports College took the lead to deliver the second Burntwood Indoor Athletics competition organised for the Burntwood and Lichfield School Sport Partnership.
BTec students came together for a 2 hour training event to plan and organise the competition which involved both track and fields events. Leaders were tasked with setting up, delivering, officiating and scoring each of the 32 events.
On the 8th December around 150 year 5/6 pupils from 5 primary schools from the Partnership embarked on Chasetown Specialist Sports College and battled it out to decide who would be crowned Burntwood Indoor Athletics winners. At the end of the two and half hour event Hollygrove Primary school were crowned winners with a score of 274 points.
The success of the competition was down to the leaders who were polite, courteous and very responsible on the day. Nigel Camacho, Competition Manager said: “Without the leaders the competition could not have gone ahead they took the initiative and worked really well together. It’s been a pleasure working with them."
Sports Hall Athletics – Young Leaders
The above event which was organised by Burntwood and Lichfield School Sport Partnership was led by the Y10 Btec students from the Friary School on Tuesday 17th November. The volunteers had one training session and were then thrown in at the deep end to ensure the event went smoothly!
On the 1st round of the field events they were slightly overwhelmed but rapidly settled down and got to grips with what they were supposed to be doing.
They were all very enthusiastic and supportive of the competitors, from 7 Lichfield Primary Schools, throughout the whole afternoon and behaved in a professional manner. They demonstrated events and encouraged throughout.
Below are pictures of some of the Young Leaders who gave up their time to support this event which was won by St Michael’s Primary School, Lichfield.

Get Set is the London 2012 educational programme which offers children and young people aged 3-19 years, from schools and colleges across the UK, to learn more about the Olympic and Paralympic values and play their part in the 2012 Games.
Through its website, Get Set provides a range of flexible learning resources including games, fact sheets, films, news articles and more.
To date over 240 schools across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have signed up to become a part of the Get Set programme which will enhance learning right across the curriculum through sport, culture and education. This puts the County in the top ten in the country for the number of registrations. These schools can now apply to join the Get Set Network in recognition of their commitment to promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values, which will see them rewarded with a licence to use the London 2012 logo.
County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture and one of the Staffordshire representatives for the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games said: “Get Set is an exciting programme which is bringing the inspiration of the London 2012 Games into the classrooms and lives of young people across the UK. We are delighted that we have so many of our Staffordshire schools already registered with the programme and would urge others to do so now by visiting www.london2012.com/getset to enjoy the many benefits that Get Set can bring to children and young people in the county.”
Ben Warren aged 17 from Newcastle added: “Our visit to the Olympic Park was inspirational and I’m excited that London 2012 will be an opportunity for us to see the best athletes in the world in our own country. There will also be loads of new opportunities for young people to get involved and as a Young Ambassador and Get Set Leader I will be promoting this in my area.”
