Christmas comes early to Wolstanton High School |
Newcastle under Lyme SSP held their first ever
Christmas came early to Wolstanton High School when they were victorious in both the boys and girls year 7 Partnership Futsal Championships.
Taking part in the first ever event, to be run in Newcastle and the first of its kind to be held at Keele University, Wolstanton brushed aside all their opponents to come out top at both events.
On Tuesday 8th December 2009, seven schools from across the partnership took part in the boys event. Maryhill, Clough Hall, Wolstanton, Madeley, St John Fisher, Sir Thomas Boughey and Chesterton competed in a fast, action packed event. The final was between St John Fisher and Wolstanton. A tight close game was won 2-0 by Wolstanton and they went forward to the county finals.

On Thursday 10th December, the girls' event ran with five schools taking part: Clough Hall, Wolstanton, St John Fisher, Madeley and Sir Thomas Boughey. The majority of the girls were having their first taste of Futsal and there were some very high scoring games in the opening exchanges. A sense of deja vu hit us all as the final games saw two front runners in St John Fisher and Wolstanton leading the way. It was to be Wolstanton's night again when they won their last game to match the boys and win the competition and go through to the county finals.
Gareth Thomas from Staffordshire FA said “Working in partnership with the Competition Managers across Staffordshire, we want to give all secondary schools in the County the opportunity of learning more about the game of Futsal, and also provide them with exciting exit routes in the form of District, County, Regional and National Futsal Competitions. The FA believe that Futsal can make a contribution to the technical development of young players, and many Countries that we admire for the technical skills of their players use Futsal as an aspect of youth development. Ball retention, quick and skilful play, and tactical awareness, are all key skills within the game of Futsal”.
“The two district competitions organised by Andy Moon for the secondary schools in Newcastle, proved to be an excellent opportunity for boys & girls in year 7 to develop these skills, and it was great to see how much the children seemed to enjoy this format of the game. We hope that their teachers have also enjoyed delivering Futsal within their respective schools during this initiative, and we’ll certainly look to repeat the success of these competitions by working in partnership with Andy and the other Competition Managers in the future”.

Futsal Fever hits the Moorlands
Staffordshire Moorlands SSP held their first ever Futsal Championships. There was a Year 7 boys and Year 7 Girls Competition.
On Monday 30th November and Tuesday 1st December 2009 at South Moorlands Leisure Centre, Staffordshire Moorlands SSP held their inaugural Year 7 Futsal Championship.
The competition feeds directly into Staffordshire FAs brand new county competition on 4th and 11th February 2010 at Chase Leisure Centre.
In the boys event there were four schools competing for the honour of representing the Moorlands in February. Painsley, Cheadle High, St Edwards and Blythe Bridge took part in a round robin tournament with some fantastic South American styled football skills on show. The players took to the game instantly and with two pitches, goals and Staffordshire FA referees overseeing the competition and supported by young leaders from Painsley the event was a huge success. The competition went down to the final game and Cheadle High beat Painsley by the odd goal in 5 (3-2) to win the tournament and go through to the County Finals!
The following night saw the girls event take place, which was supported by Painsley, Blythe Bridge and two teams from St Edwards Junior High. Again the event was well received and the girls enjoyed the contest. St Edwards A team were the eventual winners and will go through to represent the county at Chase Leisure Centre in February.
It was very pleasing to see the event run so well as 99% of the participants told me before the event they had never played a competitive Futsal match before. It gives us lots of positive feedback for Futsal and something I am very keen to build on in the next 12 months.
