County Sports Partnership Update

 

 

2009 has been a tremendous year for SASSOT

 

The Partnership has achieved a great deal and rapid progress has been made in delivering the actions contained within the current delivery plan.

 

Some notable highlights include the successful implementation of the Sport Unlimited programme, achievement of the Advanced Standard for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport, establishing the coach scholarship, club development and ACCESS Across Staffordshire funds to support front line delivery, development of the PE, Sport and Culture Stakeholder Group to support the Building Schools for the Future programme, publication of the sub-regional Sports Facilities Framework and developing partnership working through the Local Area Agreements to help deliver our targets to increase participation in sport and physical activity.

The success is due to the hard work and dedication of everyone associated with the Partnership, and I would like to thank you for your support and congratulate you on the many achievements.

Can I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I look forward to our continued partnership working in delivering our vision of "Increasingly active, healthy and successful communities".

SASSOT Sports Club Accreditation funding - 2nd Round Open

 

The SASSOT Sports Club Accreditation funding scheme was launched in September 2009 with the aim to increase the number of sports clubs being accredited or re-accredited with Clubmark, NGB Accreditation or the SASSOT QualityMark.  

 

The 2nd Round is now open and funding is
available to sports clubs who require financial assistance to achieve and pass their accreditation criteria although it cannot be used for NGB coaching qualifications.

Sports clubs requiring funding for coaching qualifications can apply to the SASSOT Coach Scholarship funding scheme.

 

All sports clubs benefiting from this funding must be based within Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent to qualify and commit to achieving accreditation within 6 months.

 

Betley Football Club, Fountains Community Sports Club, Friary Judo Club, North Staffs Rowing Club, Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Club, Sporting Club Tamworth Youth Bowling Club, Stafford and Stone Canoe Club, Trentham Canoe Club, Stafford Netball Club, Uttoxeter Cricket Club and Uttoxeter Rugby Union FC were all successful in securing funding in Round 1 for club accreditation or re-accreditation.

Coach Scholarship Scheme – next round of assessment dates set

 

Are you gearing up for your Spring round of coaching courses?

 

The next date for assessing scholarship applications is: 10^th February 2010 (applications must be received by 27^th January). 

 

The SASSOT Coach Scholarship Scheme can assist with the costs of coaching courses.

The next round of applications for the SASSoT Coach Scholarship Scheme will be assessed on Wednesday 10^th February 2010. (Applications should be in by 27^th January 2010 please).

 

The focus of this funding is to train level 1 and 2 coaches, however level 3 coaches can be supported where the applicant organisation can provide clear evidence of need. All coaches benefiting from scheme must either work as a coach or reside in the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent sub region to qualify. Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively so all applications must be submitted and approved prior to coaches attending the training that the grant is subsidising. Applications can only be received from Local Authority, NGB or SSP partners.

Workshops
  

We are now near to the end of the year where workshops are coming to a close. 

 

The level of participation in the current workshops is extremely high and I would like to thank you all for your commitment and support to the workshop programme. I apologise for any person who has been unable to book a place on the sessions during November due to the capacity, but wish to state that you will find attached to this newsletter a list of current workshops that have been scheduled for January 2010, through to the end of March 2010.      

 

New Workshops!!!!!!

Please be aware that Sports Coach UK have introduced some new workshops which are on the programme next year near you….. 

• Fundamentals of Agility
• Fundamentals of Balance
• Fundamentals of Coordination
• Safeguarding & Protecting Children 2: Reflecting on Practice
• Positive Management Behaviour in Sport 

If there are any groups or individuals out there, who are seeking something in a particular area or seeking a “Closed” workshop for a group of eight persons or more, please contact me and I will do what I can to help.

 

If you are unable to locate a suitable session due to time/date, I can share other dates that are "Closed" workshops” but can be offered out on occasion due to lack of numbers.    

Please note that attendance of the current Safeguarding and Protecting Children is a pre-requiste workshop to attend prior to the New Safeguarding & Protecting Children 2: Reflecting on Practice. 

 

As always we do advise that as some sports have more stringent First Aid requirements for Clubmark and coaching purposes, all delegates should check with their NGB before enrolling on these workshops in order to avoid disappointment after the event.  

 

Can I please ask that you check the website on a regular basis as updates are always being made to dates and venues.

Please be advised that in cases of cancellations, a 5 working day notice period is required.  Delegates can opt to change to another workshop or alternatively send another representative.

 

Please call me to discuss any area above which you feel needs clarifying. I do have details with regards to what the new sessions cover, so again please contact me and I will be happy to share this information with you.

Based at Stafford Borough Council, Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) is a partnership of local, regional and national agencies whose aim is to develop community sport, physical activity and physical education in the sub region. SASSOT is one of a network of 49 County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) in England.

 

In conjunction with England Basketball, SASSOT is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Basketball Development Officer (BDO) to lead the implementation of a Basketball Plan for the sub-region.

 

The BDO will work across the sub-region to drive up basketball participation, increase the quality and quantity of basketball competition and also improve the local coaching, officiating and club infrastructure.  This will involve working directly with affiliated basketball clubs as well as a range of colleagues in Local Authorities, School Sport Partnerships, Further and Higher Education, and the National Governing Body.

 

You will be self-motivated and a strong communicator with the ability to develop successful partnerships with a range of organisations.

Experience of working in sports development and knowledge of current sports development initiatives and structures are required. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a high performing CSP team and make a positive difference to basketball in staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

Ruth Holdway - a true inspiration

You may or may not already be aware of the sad news that Ruth Holdway, of Stone Road, Trentham, died on 29 November as a result of a tragic accident whilst on a family walking holiday . 

 

Ruth helped introduce hundreds of youngsters, including many disabled children, to canoeing as a community sports coach at both Trentham and Stafford and Stone Canoe Club.

 

She work tirelessly to ensure that Trentham Watersports Association achieved their ambition to develop a new club house which was officially opened in September 2009.

 

She was an inspiration to the canoe world and will be sadly missed by all. Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent extend their sympathy to her family and friends.
