Making a planning application - A practical guide for sports clubs
Sport England, in partnership with the Department of Communities and Local Government, has published a new guide to planning applications aimed at sports clubs who want to improve their facilities.
We know that poor quality facilities are a significant barrier to increasing participation in sport at a grassroots level. All too often the planning system is viewed as an obstacle as opposed to a means of securing the best possible outcome, and when approached incorrectly can result in frustration, financial loss and damaged relationships.
Small sports clubs can find it difficult to get planning permission for improving their facilities, from getting floodlighting for tennis courts to changing the surface of a football pitch. That’s why Sport England have produced this guidance for sports clubs on how to improve the quality of their planning applications.

Sportshall Athletics and Badminton competitions grow in popularity
Priority Sportshall Athletics competition rises in South Staffs & Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnerships
The priority Sportshall Athletics competitions continue to grow in popularity in Nick Richards’ double district School Sport Partnership (SSP) areas of South Staffs and Stafford and Stone.
Due to the success in Sportshall Athletics last year, both partnerships have been awarded extra places for other schools to experience competing at a higher level.
Stafford and Stone SSP had thirty schools from Primary, Middle and High Schools compete in competitions hosted at several High Schools throughout the district during November.
St Austins Catholic Primary Yr 5/6, Sir Graham Balfour Yr 7 and 8 Girls, Yr 8 Boys. Walton Priory Middle Yr 7 Boys, Blessed William Howard Yr 8 Girls and Walton High Yr 8 Boys will represent the Stafford and Stone Partnership at the County Finals in January.
South Staffordshire SSP had thirteen schools from Primary, Middle and High schools compete at Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School and Ounsdale High with the final held Aldersley Stadium.
South Staffordshire SSP will be represented by Glenthorne Primary in the small schools competition and Codsall Middle Yr 5/6, Yr 7 + 8 Boys and Girls along with Perton Middle Yr 7 Girls.
Young pupils who attended a leadership academy course on Sportshall Athletics in October assisted with scoring, judging and time keeping and this enabled each event to run smoothly throughout the competition.
“The success in both partnerships from last year’s County Final enabled more schools to experience competing at a higher level.” said Nick Richards Competition Manager for South Staffordshire and Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership.

Priority Badminton Competition grows in popularity in South Staffs & Stafford and Stone SSPs
The priority badminton competitions continue to increase in Nick Richards’ double district SSP areas of South Staffs and Stafford and Stone.
The badminton competition involves four players competing in two singles and three doubles games against each school in a series of round robin games.
Stafford and Stone had six schools compete in competitions hosted at King Edward VI High School.
The partnership champions were Blessed William Howard in boys Yr 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11 and Alleynes High School Yr 7,8,9 and King Edward VI winning the girls competition in Yr 10/11.
South Staffs had four High Schools and two Middle Schools competing in competitions hosted at Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School and Ounsdale High.
Cheslyn Hay and Wolgarston High Schools Yr 10/11 will play Ounsdale High School Yr 10/11 to decide which school will represent the partnership.
“More schools entered this year and the quality of the games played had improved from last year” said Nick Richards Competition Manager for South Staffordshire and Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership.

School Competitions in East Staffordshire
A variety of competitions have taken place over the past few weeks covering sportshall athletics, speed stacking and table tennis.
Sports Stacking Festival
The first East Staffordshire Sports Stacking Festival took place at Queen's Street Community Centre, on the 9th December. The event involved 38 pupils from five schools competing in individual and team challenges. There was an individual competition for KS1 and KS2 pupils and a team relay involving both KS1 and KS2. The KS2 Individual competition was won by St Modwen's with some impressive times and the KS1 competition by All Saints Alrewas. The team relay was won by The Mosley School in a tense head to head final. The event was kindly supported by Ron Parker from Speed Stacks UK who provided sport stacking equipment and donated the team trophy.
Ability Table Tennis Competition
Tuesday 23rd November 2010 saw an Ability Table Tennis Competition take place in Uttoxeter.
Fifteen young people from Ryecroft Middle School, Windsor Park Middle School, The Henry Prince First School and Picknall's First School attended a competition at Ryecroft Middle School. Students took part in a range of different challenges from trying to knock down bottles, to landing the ball on a specific target. Once the students had completed the seven challenges they took part in table tennis match play.
The competitors were supported by young leaders from Ryecroft Middle School during the event, who organised the individual challenges and umpired the matches. The event was part of the East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership ability pathway, ensuring competition for every young person. Students have now been invited to attend a county assessment day in April, led by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent.
The event was part of the Ability Pathway, a playground to podium intervention, introduced in 2008 designed to springboard the development of a sustainable pathway for young people with disabilities within East Staffordshire. This has included the delivery of competitions and identification events which, to date, have been attended by 141 young people from 18 primary and 10 secondary schools, supported by school staff, particularly the special educational needs co-ordinators.
These events have also been run by young sports leaders who enrich the sporting experiences for the young people through their ongoing involvement within the community ability clubs, in particular Burton Uxbridge Ability Table Tennis Club which operates weekly at Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Sports College.
Indoor Athletics
Tuesday 7th December 2010 saw seven schools from across East Staffordshire competing in indoor athletics for a place at the county finals.

Tight lines at Chancel Primary, Rugeley
‘Sport Unlimited’ is a three-year, £36 million national programme funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to get more children taking part in sport outside of school. The programme targets the 50% of young people who are classed as ‘semi-sporty’ and offers them the chance to attend an 8-10 week block of sessions introducing them to a new sport or giving them the chance to improve their skills in something they’ve already tried and enjoyed.
Angling is an ideal sport to offer to this target group, as it is something that most young people are unlikely to have tried already and will appeal to those that are don’t enjoy traditional team sports. The angling course covers a wide range of areas, including fish identification, appreciation of the environment, safety, basic first aid, as well as key fishing skills with both classroom workshops and pool sessions.
Nigel Kuhn, UK level 2 Angling Coach comments: “This is a great opportunity for youngsters to take part in a different sport, something that they wouldn’t normally be offered in the school environment. Fishing can bring whole families together, and often grandparents too, and is a great way to show young people how much the outdoors has to offer. We have had an overwhelming response from the pupils at Chancel Primary, and from staff at the school. I hope that this will be the first of several schools that we can offer this opportunity to."

Emma Pass GB Basketballer visits Hednesford Valley High School
A visit in October to Hednesford Valley High school by Emma Pass GB Basketball player was inspirational.
A collapsed timetable on the day allowed students to choose a variety of “Health Related Activities” as part of the Curriculum Enrichment programme. Street Dance by Gil Lyons from the Cannock and Rugeley School Sport Partnership led sessions, Louise Day from British Cycling ran a workshop and some Go Ride Races, students went swimming to Cannock Leisure Centre and Emma led a Basketball class.
Emma gave a presentation of her pathway into Basketball with slides, GB Shirts and plenty of stories, she was so inspirational the students were very impressed.
Hednesford Valley has been running a Cycling Club through Sport Unlimited funding for three terms now and it has gained in popularity. We have seen a huge impact in the skill levels and confidence of the students even to the extent of their enthusiasm to participate in small competitive races.

Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Club awarded Seal of Approval Club of the Year 2010
Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Club were invited to Twickenham on Saturday 13th November to be presented with their Whole Club Seal of Approval certificate at half-time of the England v Australia match.
The club was the first in Staffordshire and also the West Midlands to achieve the award and was hence voted the region's Seal of Approval Club of the Year 2010.
For further information on the club please visit http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/stokeontrent/
The generic name for Seal of Approval is Clubmark, which is a cross-sport quality accreditation for clubs with junior sections and is rapidly becoming the national standard for quality sports clubs. More national governing bodies of sport are adopting the scheme and over 240 clubs throughout Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have now achieved Clubmark/NGB accreditation.
Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) are working with sports organisations and local councils to encourage more clubs to raise standards and join.
Clubmark was introduced by Sport England to:
Clubmark accreditation is awarded to clubs that comply with minimum operating standards in four areas:
Parents looking for quality clubs, whatever sport, are likely to seek out the accredited clubs awarded the Clubmark status. The accredited clubs, of all sports, will be added to the list on the Sport England Clubmark and SASSOT website. They will be promoted by Local Councils in their publications, when approached by parents and with their dealings with schools and colleges looking for clubs for their pupils.
Clubs awarded Clubmark can be proud of what they have achieved. Parents can be assured that their children belong to a safer club. Members can be sure their club is a well-managed club, striving to offer the best in coaching and sports development. By striving to achieve higher standards clubs are likely to attract more members and build a sustainable future.
The goal is for every club in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to reach higher standards of safety, fairness, coaching and management. That way the sub-region's sports club infrastructure will be safer, stronger and more successful.
For further information on Clubmark please visit www.clubmark.org.uk or contact Chris Turner.

Stone Sailor named West Midlands RYA Young Sailor of the Year 2010
Stone sailor Sarah Norbury will receive one of youth sailing’s most prestigious awards – the West Midlands RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Award 2010 – at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show in January in recognition of her achievements throughout this year.
The 13-year-old South Staffordshire Sailing Club talent enjoyed a great 2010 winning the British Ladies Optimist Championship title on the 2012 Olympic waters at Weymouth and Portland in August and also represented RYA Team GBR at the Optimist Europeans in Poland in July, where she finished top British girl.
Sarah Norbury
She said: “I knew my club had nominated me but I really didn’t expect to win, it’s amazing and I’m really pleased and proud. I’ve had a lot of highlights this year but the turning point probably came at the Braassemermeer Easter Regatta in Holland when I finished first lady and fourth overall against 223 sailors from all over the World. I suddenly realised I could sail and win against the best.”
Sarah and her family were introduced to sailing at South Staffs SC by friends and the family have fully embraced life at the Gailey Reservoir-based club. Although Sarah can spend six weekends training with the RYA National Junior Squad at Weymouth and Portland or Pwllheli, North Wales every winter and competes all over Europe in the summer, she still tries to do as much club racing as she can at South Staffs SC.
Sarah admits sailing changed her life.
“Sailing’s given me so much confidence. When you’re on the water you’ve got to think about so much and make so many decisions that you learn making some wrong decisions isn’t the end of the world, which makes you less scared to try new things. I’ve also travelled to so many countries and made so many friends around the world that I wouldn’t have done if I didn’t sail.”
Sarah Norbury in action. Credit Paul Wyeth/ www.pwpictures.com
“Probably the most nerve-racking event will be the Selection Event in May. This is four days where the top ranked sailors in Britain compete for places for the team to go to the Worlds, Europeans and French Nationals. I’d love to get into that team.”
Sarah will join 12 other RYA regional award winners from across Britain for a VIP day at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday 8 January.
RYA Chief Executive Sarah Treseder said: “Winning an RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Award is a fantastic achievement. I’m delighted to recognise the talent of these young people and the dedication they show for our sport. So many young sailors are out there on the water enjoying themselves and achieving brilliant things.”
Some of Britain’s most successful ever sailors have passed through the Optimist class on their way to the biggest prize in World sport including Skandia Team GBR’s multiple gold medallists Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Sarah Ayton.

The older age groups had teams from the Dimensions StreetGames session, the Bankeyfields Estate, Tunstall, a team from the Fenton StreetGames session and 2 teams from the Greenfield Road StreetGames session. As you will see there is a change to the way we are issuing the activity news sheets. We had a lot of feedback to say that unfortunately our news sheets were filling up your inboxes, so taking this into account we have uploaded the news sheets on www.youfind.me.uk where you will be able to download them.
Making it easier to renew and add your activities to www.youfind.me.uk
After 12 months, activities on www.youfind.me.uk expire and the user is asked to re-submit the entry. This used to involve the user logging in and changing the start and end date of the activity. As this can be quite time consuming, we will now e-mail you a link which you can use to automatically renew your activities for another 12 months.
When adding an activity which runs everyday of the week, you used to have to go through a process seven times adding a different day each time. There is now an option where you can select ‘Everyday’, ‘Week days’, or ‘Weekends’.
