Athletes Go for Gold at Stafford Sportshall Event
Athletes from across the West Midlands region competed at the annual indoor Sportshall event hosted by Stafford Special Olympics at Cannock Leisure Centre on Sunday 5th December.
Nearly 200 athletes between the ages of eight years to adults took part in this annual event and competed in events such as indoor javelin, speed bounce, standing long jump and a variety of running events including relays.
This annual event gives athletes the chance to come together to experience various events in a safe supportive and enjoyable environment. The event was supported through sponsorship by ABB who provided volunteers for the day.
The team from Special Olympics Worcester made a sweep of the trophies up for grabs on the day although the junior under 11’s team from Stafford picked up the team trophy.
Clive Gibson, Co-ordinator and Head Coach of Stafford Special Olympics said "This is the fourth year that we have staged this event and it has gone from strength to strength as it is the only indoor event in the West Midland Region. This is something that we are truly proud of and I would like to extend my thanks to all involved, athletes, coaches, volunteers, parents and carers for making this event such an enjoyable day."
The parents and carers of the athletes played their part too by setting up a tombola stall which raised over £150 for club funds.
Special Olympics GB is the country’s largest sports training and competition programme for learning disabled children and adults of all ability levels and works towards “Transforming Lives Through Sport.”
