School Competitions in East Staffordshire |
A variety of competitions have taken place over the past few weeks covering sportshall athletics, speed stacking and table tennis.
Sports Stacking Festival
The first East Staffordshire Sports Stacking Festival took place at Queen's Street Community Centre, on the 9th December. The event involved 38 pupils from five schools competing in individual and team challenges. There was an individual competition for KS1 and KS2 pupils and a team relay involving both KS1 and KS2. The KS2 Individual competition was won by St Modwen's with some impressive times and the KS1 competition by All Saints Alrewas. The team relay was won by The Mosley School in a tense head to head final. The event was kindly supported by Ron Parker from Speed Stacks UK who provided sport stacking equipment and donated the team trophy.
Ability Table Tennis Competition
Tuesday 23rd November 2010 saw an Ability Table Tennis Competition take place in Uttoxeter.
Fifteen young people from Ryecroft Middle School, Windsor Park Middle School, The Henry Prince First School and Picknall's First School attended a competition at Ryecroft Middle School. Students took part in a range of different challenges from trying to knock down bottles, to landing the ball on a specific target. Once the students had completed the seven challenges they took part in table tennis match play.
The competitors were supported by young leaders from Ryecroft Middle School during the event, who organised the individual challenges and umpired the matches. The event was part of the East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership ability pathway, ensuring competition for every young person. Students have now been invited to attend a county assessment day in April, led by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent.
The event was part of the Ability Pathway, a playground to podium intervention, introduced in 2008 designed to springboard the development of a sustainable pathway for young people with disabilities within East Staffordshire. This has included the delivery of competitions and identification events which, to date, have been attended by 141 young people from 18 primary and 10 secondary schools, supported by school staff, particularly the special educational needs co-ordinators.
These events have also been run by young sports leaders who enrich the sporting experiences for the young people through their ongoing involvement within the community ability clubs, in particular Burton Uxbridge Ability Table Tennis Club which operates weekly at Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Sports College.
Indoor Athletics
Tuesday 7th December 2010 saw seven schools from across East Staffordshire competing in indoor athletics for a place at the county finals.
