Sport England funding delivers UK’s best mountain biking trail

A purpose-built mountain biking trail, in which we’ve invested £130,800, has been voted the UK’s best place to ride by readers of the sport’s leading magazine, Mountain Bike Rider.

The Monkey Trail was named ‘Reader Trail of the Year’ - having proved popular with experienced riders from across the country since launching at Cannock Chase in April. The eight kilometre course was built as part of a larger £200,000 project to improve the sporting facilities available.

Bringing sports consumers into focus

A new online tool from Sport England will help sports organisations to know more about their potential customers so they can offer the right sport in the right place, targeted in the right way.

In just a few clicks, sports clubs, governing bodies, councils and other providers can find out which sports local people are likely to play – or would consider playing.

Why do some people, particularly in harder to reach groups, not take part in sport and physical activity? And what public interventions successfully manage to change behaviours and reduce barriers?

Variations in participation between local areas and across sports

In September 2009, Sport England commissioned the Futures Company and Mindshare to undertake a project to better understand factors that affect sports participation.
The research looked at both; variations in sports participation between local areas, and across 11 sports. The research undertaken used statistical modeling to better understand a range of factors affecting sports participation and qualitative research to provide further insights into variations in participation.

Gold Challenge launches: your chance to be
part of London 2012's sporting legacy

Adults across the country can now sign up to Gold Challenge, which is harnessing the inspiration of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games to give everyone the chance to be part of the sporting legacy.

This independent initiative is part of the Places People Play mass participation legacy plan we announced last month.

Dive drive set to boost number
of sub-aqua leaders

Sport England has invested £15,000 in a new project set to increase the number of Dive Leaders working in diving and sub-aqua clubs across the country.

The funding, which will be matched by The British
Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC), will help existing trained divers to progress to what is seen as an ‘aspirational diving grade’ for many participants – Dive Leader.

The investment comes from Sport England’s Impact and Improvement Fund which supports smaller national governing bodies of sport as they develop and expand their activities.
