Tight lines at Chancel Primary, Rugeley
Pupils at The Chancel Primary School, Rugeley, are being given the opportunity to enjoy an Introduction to Angling course thanks to Staffordshire Youth Anglers. The course, which is part of the Sport Unlimited programme, is being delivered by coaches from the club and offers pupils a brilliant chance to take part in one of the UK’s biggest sports.
‘Sport Unlimited’ is a three-year, £36 million national programme funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to get more children taking part in sport outside of school. The programme targets the 50% of young people who are classed as ‘semi-sporty’ and offers them the chance to attend an 8-10 week block of sessions introducing them to a new sport or giving them the chance to improve their skills in something
they’ve already tried and enjoyed.
Angling is an ideal sport to offer to this target group, as it is something that most young people are unlikely to have tried already and will appeal to those that are don’t enjoy traditional team sports. The angling course covers a wide range of areas, including fish identification, appreciation of the environment, safety, basic first aid, as well as key fishing skills with both classroom workshops and pool sessions.
Nigel Kuhn, UK level 2 Angling Coach comments: “This is a great opportunity for youngsters to take part in a different sport, something that they wouldn’t normally be offered in the school environment. Fishing can bring whole families together, and often grandparents too, and is a great way to show young people how much the outdoors has to offer. We have had an overwhelming response from the pupils at Chancel Primary, and from staff at the
school. I hope that this will be the first of several schools that we can offer this opportunity to."
