New Get into Golf scheme for Staffordshire
The winter may not seem the obvious time to take up golf – but a new scheme in Staffordshire is providing the perfect incentive to tee up for the first time.
Six driving ranges in the county have signed up to provide a route into golf for beginners.
The project is being organised by the Staffordshire County Golf Partnership and has attracted backing from golf club manufacturers Wilson Staff.
Everyone taking part on one of the courses will be offered a free club, courtesy of Wilson Staff.
The driving ranges taking part are at Branston Golf and Country Club, Lichfield Golf and Country Club, Stone Driving Range, The Golf Academy at the Range, Essington, 3 Hammers golf complex and Keele Driving Range.
Sean Hammill, county development officer for the county golf partnership, says: “We are indebted to Wilson Staff for their support. The free golf club will give beginners something to use for practice between lessons which will help them develop their game. It gives them a good starting point to build up a set of clubs if they become more involved in the sport.
“The facilities on offer at the ranges mean whatever the weather people can get out during the winter for some healthy exercise while learning a new sport which will stand them in good stead for the years ahead.”
A mixture of free taster sessions and group coaching lessons will be on offer as part of the Go 4 Green scheme.
Full details are available at the county partnership's website – www.staffsgolfpartnership.com – or at a new facebook site, StaffsGolfGetintoGolf.
Stuart Alford, of Wilson Staff, says: “We are delighted to support the work going on in Staffordshire to encourage more people to take up golf.
“Our clubs suit all ranges of abilities in the game – from top players like Padraig Harrington to those taking their first shots.”
The Staffordshire Golf Partnership is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England. In Staffordshire the partnership is supported by the Staffordshire Ladies County Golf Association, the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs and the Staffordshire PGA.

2012 plans for Midlands Golf Week revealed
Midlands Golf Week is going for gold in Olympic year with a new date and new plans to introduce the sport to even more people.
The week-long festival of golf – which is held across seven counties - will take place from April 9-15, 2012.
This year's Midlands Golf Week was the first to be staged and saw nearly 1,200 would-be golfers get involved in free taster sessions and coaching programmes at more than 80 clubs.
“The week proved a great success,” says Sharon Heeley, regional development officer for the English Golf Union and English Women's Golf Association. “Now we want to build on that success by involving even more clubs and raising the profile even further about what is on offer at golf clubs across the Midlands.”
Next year's sporting calendar will be dominated by the Olympics in London, but it is hoped the new date will help golf clubs make the most of the high level of interest surrounding the sport at the time of the US Masters in April.
Golf itself can look forward to a return to the Olympic schedule in 2016 – for the first time since 1904 – which will help the worldwide drive to encourage more people to take up a sport that offers many social and health benefits.
“The clubs that staged events during this year's Midlands Golf Week worked really hard and there were some really imaginative ideas,” added Sharon Heeley. “The fact that we have announced next year's date already means clubs can plan ahead and look at ways of marketing their events and getting the local community involved.”
The website www.midlandsgolfweek.co.uk is being used to share the best ideas as clubs prepare for 2012 and will once again include a full events listing.
Events this year included taster sessions for a number of different groups ranging from juniors to families, ladies only to couples, as well as group coaching sessions or discounted green fees.
Midlands GolfWeek will be publicised with a series of public venue road-shows to be held in February and March next year to encourage people to sign up for club-based activities while local business and groups such as Rotary, WI and Ladies Circles will also be encouraged to get involved. This year saw the ladies from Stratford WI Lite enjoy a special taster session night out at the Stratford Oaks Golf Centre – and many of them have returned to develop their interest in golf.
“By starting to plan the 2012 Midlands Golf Week now, clubs can make the most of the support that is available and we can help build a strong future for the game of golf,” adds Sharon Heeley.
The counties taking part are Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
