Dear all
As you are no doubt aware, we have fulfilled our criteria of Sporting Champions visits for the period up to 31st March 2009. We now have a significant waiting list should any events fall through during this period, and therefore not to falsely raise hopes of a Champion appearance we will now not be processing or holding any more visits submitted. |
![]() |
With regards to the future of Sporting Champions, the scheme is currently undergoing a re-procurement process, and we are aware that there will be a shift in focus of the scheme to align with the new Sport England agenda. We are therefore also not taking nominations for visits from April 1st onwards. As soon as there is clear communication with regards to the future look and feel of the scheme we will communicate out to you again.
For those organisations that have been nominated, or have expressed an interest in receiving a visit after the 1st April will be contacted and advised of the above.
Again we would like to thank you for your hard work in making the scheme the success it has been over the past few years.

Talented young Staffordshire athletes launch new 2012 Legacy Action Plan
A group of talented young Staffordshire athletes helped to launch a new action plan on 26 February, which sets out how Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent and its communities can benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Legacy Action Plan for the 2012 Games was launched at the second Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent 2012 Conference which took place at Britannia Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent.
The Plan has been developed following consultation with local and regional organisations, sports clubs, local councils and the wider community. It will provide a framework which can be used to engage people within Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent in the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to gain the maximum economic, sporting, cultural, health and social benefits for the area from the London 2012 Games. Local business representatives were among the delegates at the Conference, which welcomed Tony Ward, official referee for the swimming competition at the Beijing Paralympics among the speakers. Alex Nelson from Birches Head, Stoke-on-Trent, one of Britain’s most promising young athletes ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games also offered his Games experience in becoming an Olympic Athlete.
Other speakers included Paul Kaynes, West Midlands Creative Programmer, who gave an overview of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands, Councillor Chris Saint, Chair of the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games, who talked about the regional plans for the 2012 Games and Jim Johnston, Business Manager 2012 Games, Advantage West Midlands, who highlighted the business opportunities from the London 2012 Games’.
The event concluded with a series of workshops focusing on local case studies inspired by the 2012 Games, including the Cultural Olympiad in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, business intelligence, young people, support for sports clubs and how to inspire our communities to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
County Councillor Maureen Compton, one of the Staffordshire representatives on the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games said: "The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are a real opportunity for the whole of the UK. Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent lies in the heart of the country and is well positioned, geographically and metaphorically, to capitalise on the Games being hosted on home soil to realise a wide range of benefits for our Sub Region. We believe that a successful Games will mean sustaining a legacy, particularly in terms of inspiring people, whether that is to participate in more sport and cultural activity or encourage young people to be the best they can be”.
Mark Meredith, Elected Mayor for Stoke-on-Trent added: “The 2012 Olympics are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the quality of life for people across this country. But this will only happen if councils and their partners work together at every stage and at every level to plan the Games and their legacy. I’m therefore delighted to endorse this Action Plan, which links the national vision directly to our area’s priorities and aspirations.”

South Staffordshire sportshall athletics begins with success
The introduction of Sportshall Athletics Competitions in South Staffordshire has begun with a huge amount of success. 380 children took part in preliminary competitions during November and December, that qualifiied them for the County based competition. Codsall Middle School represented the district in both Year 5/6 and 7/8 with the younger age group being crowned County champions and the older age group achieving a very respectable 3rd place at Fenton Manor.
This was the first time South Staffordshire School Sport Partnership had entered the school based Sportshall Athletics Competition. The Partnership piloted the work with the district's 5 middle schools, competing in local events at Codsall and Penkridge Leisure Centres before qualifying for a district final held at Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre in January.
Additionally, as part of the Leadership Academy, 25 Leaders across the Partnership received Sportshall Athletics training and assisted with the various competitions and a further 25 Young Leaders, who had not received the training, also assisted and were integral to the smooth running of the events.
Nick Richards, Competition Manager for South Staffordshire/Stafford and Stone, commented on how well the schools in the Partnership had taken to sportshall and that plans are now in place to extend the competition to all of the district's schools.
Thanks go to all the members of staff and children who contributed to these events.

Tamworth's Cheerleaders pass their level 1 award
Girls from 4 high schools in Tamworth attended UKCA's level 1 Cheerleading course, hosted by the Tamworth School Sport Partnership (SSP), in January and all successfully passed the award to enter the leadership pathway as assistant coaches. Twenty-one girls from years 10 and 11 worked together and now hope to support the SSP through developing teams to enter inter-school festivals at both high school and primary school levels.
The girls are confident to continue their Cheerleading both in their own schools and through supporting level 2 coaches within local primary schools. A Cheerleading festival is being planned by the SSP for the summer term to allow the girls to showcase their skills and allow a link to Tamworth’s own Cheerleading club to be established and developed.

February news from Staffordshire Cricket
Graduation to Derbyshire CCC Academy
Staffordshire Cricket Board is delighted to announce that Greg Massingham has been accepted on to the Derbyshire CCC first class academy with immediate effect.
Greg who has been in the Staffordshire Emerging Player Programme from November 2008 has progressed through the county representative system and this year will play for our county U14 squad.
Greg who plays for Little Stoke CC and attends Stafford Grammar School, is an all-rounder who bowls leg spin and last year gained regional recognition at U13 age level.
His promotion to the Derbyshire Academy will mean that six players have now made this step up in the four years that the Staffordshire Academy/EPP Programme has been running.
In addition to these players we have 8 other players involved at other first class counties.
With the continuation of the ECB Emerging Players Programme, one of whose major aims is to underpin and support the First Class Academy programme, this is excellent news and demonstrates that Staffordshire continues to be at the forefront of the game in terms of youth development.
Alan Hill, EPP Head Coach for Staffordshire commented: ‘This is tremendous news for Staffordshire cricket and well deserved by Greg who has obvious talent but has also demonstrated a first class work ethic and a real desire to improve. It should also serve as a boost to our promising young players as they can see how close they are to gaining similar recognition.’
Fearnley offer fantastic deal to Staffordshire clubs
Fearnley Cricket, official kit suppliers to Staffordshire Cricket, have written a fantastic deal for all cricket clubs in the county. The agreement will see all clubs given 40% off all teamwear deals that they undertake with Fearnley Cricket.
The reviews of the Fearnley kit (which is currently being distributed amongst the county and district players) is very good and we hope clubs will take advantage of this fantastic offer. Any deals signed will also in a small way benefit the further development of youth cricket in Staffordshire.
Should any clubs wish to see the brochure please contact Andy Grice on 07831 158522 or by email andy.grice@ecb.co.uk

Virtual cycling competition
Pupils at Friary School are following in the footsteps of Sir Chris Hoy by using revolutionary Watt bikes as part of an intra-form virtual competition.
Year 11 pupils got the chance to be part of the intra-school competition as part of Friary School's Personal, Social and Health Education programme. Up to 15 pupils from each of the tutor groups cycled over a 3 minute period as fast as possible in a bid to cover the furthest distance. For added encouragement pupils were part of a larger intra-form competition to crown the fastest boy and girl within the year group.
The bikes were linked together using a laptop with an image showing real time racing being projected onto a screen, this helped to motivate pupils to pedal faster in a bid to out ride their peers.
Running the event, as a virtual competition, allowed every young person the opportunity to compete due to the fact that time and equipment restriction were not an issue. The event took place over one week and was easily delivered around the curriculum timetable. There are now plans to roll out the competition across all high schools within the Lichfield Partnership.
The virtual competition was run in conjunction with Friary Grange Manager Phil Kelley, Competition Manager Nigel Camacho and Jenny Callaway School Sport Coordinator.

Stoke's virtual tri-golf competition
Six schools and 90 pupils competed in the inaugural Stoke School Sports Partnership virtual tri-golf competition. Following on from an initial demonstration session for teachers and sports leaders by the Stoke Competition Manager, the schools were given six tri-golf activities to work through over a 12 week period. All key stage 2 pupils from each school were open to enter the competition which developed their putting and chipping skills in both curriculum time and after school clubs.
Utilising tri-golf equipment, available within the partnership, some of the schools were assisted by community golf coach John Kendall, who along with sports leaders, was able to take the children through the activities and score their efforts. The competition acted as both an intra and inter opportunity as the scores were compared with pupils from within the same school, as well as with the other schools competing.
After the competition manager collated the results, the top score from each year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupil was added together to give the school an overall score. Mill Hill primary school from North Stoke and St Matthews primary school from South Stoke came out on top and will compete in a live final to be crowned Stoke’s first ever virtual tri-golf champions!
'Both the South and North Stoke School Sports Partnerships have tri-golf competitions in the summer but this competition gave pupils the opportunity to develop their skills on their own school's site during the winter months,’ said Competition Manager, Rich Adams. ‘The activities were well received and it was great that a community coach, who is based at Burslem Golf Club, was working within the schools to facilitate a club link.'

Praise for Swim 21 accreditation process
Parents have given their almost universal backing to Swim 21 - the asa club accreditation scheme - for maintaining ‘standards of excellence within swimming'.
In the first survey of its kind, 89% of parents said that it was important or very important for their child to be involved in a club with Swim 21 status. Two thirds of parents also said Swim 21 accreditation would influence which club they would send their child to.
Swim 21 is the asa ‘quality mark' and its way of ensuring every athlete - whatever their age or level of experience - belongs to a club that provides the best possible support and environment. Specifically it's about putting the swimmers first and ensuring young athletes are following the pathway the asa recognises for training and competition (via the principles of Long Term Athlete Development).
When asked why Swim 21 was so important one parent said it was because "I know staff are child protection aware, they are qualified, there is structure to the club for movement/ development and I get what I pay for!" While another simply added it ‘maintains standards of excellence within swimming.' Two in three parents also said they had seen improvements in their club since they had become accredited.

Lafarge leads the way on Moorlands sports initiative
Lafarge Cement’s Cauldon Works in the Moorlands has given its backing to a scheme which develops leadership skills through sport for 14 to 19 year-olds. As part of its programme of community support, Lafarge has committed £1000 sponsorship for a Leadership Academy which was launched, on Friday 30 January, by the Staffordshire Moorlands School Sports Partnership.
The Academy, part of a government-backed national programme, Step Into Sport, aims to provide high quality support and development for young sports leaders who are committed to actively volunteering in their schools and communities.
Zoe Harp added “The sponsorship from Lafarge will go a long way in helping these young sports leaders and will enable us to provide training and qualifications to develop their skills which will in turn be used to support community sports clubs and schools through their volunteering.”
The best 60 sports leaders who have been selected from across the Moorlands High Schools, attended an induction day on 30 January at Biddulph High School, a Specialist Sports College near Stoke on Trent. Training workshops will be held throughout the year and a one-day conference in the summer.

Active People 2 – Sports Facts sheets Many of you will have received information on these factsheets in the SE newsletter ‘The latest from the pitch’. You will see from the list on the Sport England website that there are only 35 sports covered. The reason for this is that for some sports with lower participation rates there is insufficient data from the survey i.e. the once per week participation target for the NGBs.
Where possible there is regional data included in the factsheets.
The sports are (with live links): Angling, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball/softball. Basketball, Bowls, Boxing, Canoeing/kayaking, Cricket, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Horseriding, Judo, Mountaineering/climbing, Movement and Dance, Netball, Rounders, Rowing, Rugby league, Rugby union, Sailing, Shooting, Skiing/snowboarding, Squash, Swimming, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball and Weightlifting .
Active People Survey – measurement categories extended
As a result of discussions with the Department of Health about the measurement and reporting of the ‘two million target ‘* Sport England has agreed (with DH investment) to extend the coverage of the Active People Survey to include dance and active conservation/gardening in addition to an active travel measure included in the original survey.
This started in January 2009. The Active People Survey will therefore provide the single measurement tool for the ‘two million target.’.
* Two million people to become more active by 2013, with Sport England getting one million people doing more sport. The other million being the physical activity target.

However, some are not able to provide us with the information on talent pool/club members and are too small to just survey general participants. Therefore, we will probably end up including 44 sports this year.
We will be surveying participants with a disability, but we are not anticipating that we will be able to analyse the results by individual sport, by those with a disability due to insufficient sample (although we probably can do this overall across all 44 sports). There are the disability sports which are going to be included in the survey also - wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and boccia. During the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR07) period (2008-09 to 2010-11), English councils are collectively required to achieve £4.9bn cash-releasing efficiency gains. Delivering Value for Money in Local Government set an expectation that nearly 60 per cent of this total (£2.8bn) would arise through smarter procurement.
This independent Report highlights that substantial actions are underway by the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnerships (RIEPs) and others to enhance procurement efficiency. But more can be done. It sets out practical recommendations that can be acted on by relevant organisations, such as the RIEPs.
