Tamworth's Cheerleaders pass their level 1 award
Girls from 4 high schools in Tamworth attended UKCA's level 1 Cheerleading course, hosted by the Tamworth School Sport Partnership (SSP), in January and all successfully passed the award to enter the leadership pathway as assistant coaches. Twenty-one girls from years 10 and 11 worked together and now hope to support the SSP through developing teams to enter inter-school festivals at both high school and primary school levels.
The girls built on the success of school-based Cheerleading clubs, introduced through Sport Unlimited funding, to develop their knowledge and participation of the sport to new heights through their enrolment and subsequent success on UKCA’s Level 1 Cheerleading course.
Cheerleading arrived in Tamworth schools through Sport Unlimited and due to its popularity, a partnership between the SSP and Madison’s School of Dance Cheerleading and Fitness has allowed the girls to enhance their skills in the activity to become assistant coaches within the area. The girls, attended a 1 day central venue course at TamYouth Centre and were put through their paces by Kim and Lindsey who taught them not only motifs and moves but also
how, through Cheerleading, self-confidence, self-esteem and leadership abilities can be developed.
The girls are confident to continue their Cheerleading both in their own schools and through supporting level 2 coaches within local primary schools. A Cheerleading festival is being planned by the SSP for the summer term to allow the girls to showcase their skills and allow a link to Tamworth’s own Cheerleading club to be established and developed.
