Girls and Boys Have A Ball
The Sports Development Team at Stafford Borough Council recently held a High 5’s netball tournament for primary school teams from across the borough. Teams were made up of girls and boys from school years 5 & 6 and the winners and runners up will now represent the borough at a county competition.
More than 80 girls and boys from schools across Stafford Borough took part in an annual netball tournament.
Stafford Prep School saw off twelve rivals to win the ‘High 5s’ netball tournament and will now represent the borough in a county-wide competition next month.
The competition was organised by the borough council and took place at Walton High School in Stafford on Thursday 4th February. Competitors aged between 9 and 11 years old battled it out with Stafford Prep School beating St Anne’s Catholic Primary 6-3 in the final.
High 5’s netball is an adapted version of the seven a side game, designed to get primary school children playing netball. Unlike the older version the players rotate positions and non-playing members of the squad also take officiating roles – for example time-keeping or scoring.
Kath Fenn, sports development officer from the borough council, said: “The standard was very high and all the youngsters had a great time. This form of netball is a way of keeping all the children involved in the game and gives them an excellent grounding for when they move up to the seven a side version.”

Mobile Skate Park proves once again popular in Stafford
February half term once again saw the mobile skate park going out and about within the borough, and proving more popular than ever!
The Sports Development team took the mobile skate park to Doxey, Rowley Park, Flash Lea and Stone during the five days of half term. Around 35 youngsters used the park at each venue, most finding the locations very convenient to get to and from their homes.
Two sessions ran each day and the young people showed that they have a huge amount of talent not just on there skate boards, but on their bikes as well.
An indoor football coaching course also ran during February Half Term, which is something new to the Sports Development activity programme. With the weather being so cold and frosty, we decided to try an indoor football coaching session at Stafford Leisure Centre, which proved popular with all those involved. The three-day course was aimed at the 8-12 age group and was designed more around skill development than game play due to the nature of the indoor venue.
With Easter fast approaching we will also have a whole host of activities available for the school holidays. Activities will include Startrack Athletics, Football Coaching, the Mobile Skate Park and a whole lot more. Information on the Easter programme will be available on our website, www.staffordbc.gov.uk/sportsdevelopment in late March.
