Festival of sport in Stoke-on-Trent to celebrate 100 years of the City in 2010 - Stoke 2010k
Stoke-on-Trent is organising a mass participation road run to be held on Sunday May 30th 2010 starting outside Stoke Town Hall at 9:30am. The Stoke 2010k is a key event as part of the City’s Festival of Sport banner which is the City’s way of celebrating 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent as a City. The event features a 10km road run and a 2km family fun run. The event will also host a Health Related Fitness event in the Kingsway area of Stoke and also within the Kings Hall.
Stoke-on-Trent has a proud and established history of distance running success from an event participation and performance perspective. More recent decades the City’s Potters ‘Arf (Half Marathon, 13.1 miles/21km) attracts 2,000 participants and the inclusion of a shorter 10km (6.25mile) can act as a stepping stone to the Half Marathon event 2 weeks later. Entry fees are £10 for unattached runners, £8 for registered runners and £2 for Family 2k Fun runners, the race is also part of the North Staffs Road Runners Association (NSRRA) 2010 schedule and any runners considering racing should be aware that this is a very fast 10km course, especially the last 2 miles of the race.
The main sponsor is Staffordshire University who will be designing and constructing the key trophies for the event and will also over-see the filming to record this historical sporting event. The launch for the event took place on Monday 8th February 2010 at Stoke Town Hall and the introduction of the Roy Fowler Memorial Trophy which will go to the first U-16 runner in the 2km fun run. Roy Fowler was a famous local distance runner from Leek who won the World Cross-country Title in 1963. Roy was a key character on the local running scene during the 1960s & 70s and continued to coach juniors for Staffordshire Moorlands Athletic Club until his unfortunate death last year.
The aim of the event is to attract as many walkers, joggers and elite runners as possible to celebrate our Centenary year.
