Fun For All At The SASSOT 'Reach For It Family Fun Day'

Sunday 20^th February saw the second 'Reach For It' Family Fun Day take place at Leek High School, Staffordshire Moorlands. The day was designed to cater for those children with serve impairments that are likely to be wheelchair users or require one-to-one support. 

 

 

The day offered the opportunity for disabled children and their families try out a range of sports as a family. The sports on offer were:

• Cheerleading
• Rebound Therapy
• Boccia
• New Age Kurling
• Table Cricket
• Yoga

This event saw the introduction of Rebound Therapy, a new activity not previously offered. Rebound Therapy is the use of a trampoline to provide opportunities for movement and therapeutic exercise. It is also used to promote balance, relaxation, improve fitness and communication skills. The children who took part in the Fun Day thoroughly enjoyed this activity whilst their siblings enjoyed bouncing alongside them on a separate trampoline.

 

 

Our 3rd 'Reach For It' Family Fun Day will be taking place on Sunday 20th March at Burntwood Leisure Centre, Lichfield. Sports on offer are likely to include swimming, cricket, boccia, wheelchair basketball, trampolining, yoga and table tennis.

  Sports Club Accreditation Funding -
7th Round Open

 

The SASSOT Sports Club Accreditation funding scheme aims to increase the number of sports clubs being accredited or re-accredited with Clubmark, NGB Accreditation or the SASSOT QualityMark.  

 

The 7th round is now open and up to £500 worth of funding is available to sports clubs who require financial assistance to achieve and pass their accreditation criteria.

 

All sports clubs benefiting from this funding must be based within Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent to qualify and commit to achieving accreditation within 6 months.

 

Applications can only be received from sports clubs, National Governing Bodies of Sport, Local Councils or school partners.

 

Bradwell Bombers FC and Burntwood St Matthews Cricket Club were all successful in securing funding in Round 6 for club accreditation or re-accreditation.

SASSOT Coaching Website
now launched

 

Our new website dedicated as a 'one-stop shop' for sports coaches was launched in January and you can take a look by visiting http://www.sassotcoaching.org.uk/. Anyone who is currently coaching or is interested in coaching in the future should find the website useful and can register their details. The website hosts our new version of the coaches database that offers a number of benefits including:

• Online application process
• Certificates can be uploaded and stored online
• The ability to journal sessions online
• Automated emails to remind when expiry dates of qualifications or insurance are approaching
• Coaches can tell us their CPD needs
• The potential in the future to take bookings and payment for our education and training programme online

Disabilit-e News provides information about what is happening within the county, nationally and in the elite world of disability sport. It will also advertises courses, clubs, events and success stories to motivate and inspire.There is also a dedicated section on Aiming High and the good work it is doing to promote activity based short breaks for disabled children and families.

Autumn Term of Sport Unlimited the Best Yet

 

The figures for the Autumn Term of Sport Unlimited are in, and yet again it has been the most successful term so far, with 4939 young people taking part in activities and 3453 being ‘retained’.

 

Through the Sport Unlimited programme, young people from across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have been given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sports. The programme targets ‘semi-sporty’ young people, and offers them the chance to attend an 8-10 week block of sessions introducing them to a new sport or giving them the chance to improve their skills in something they’ve already tried and enjoyed. Activities are selected based on consultation with young people, and include a variety non-traditional sports such as handball, dodgeball and American football as well as ‘old favourites’ such as football and cricket. 

 

The penultimate term of this three-year programme has just finished, and has been the most successful by far.  4939 young people attended courses during the Autumn Term, with 3453 or 70% being ‘retained’, meaning they attended at least 60% of the sessions. Since the start of the programme, over 16,000 young people have been retained in their projects.

 

At a local level, the programme is co-ordinated by either the School Sport Partnership or the Local Authority, who are responsible for ensuring that what is offered locally is what young people want, and for engaging with other local organisations to deliver activity. Nearly £750,000 from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will have been invested within the sub-region over the three years of the programme, and with all activity well underway for the final term, by the end of Sport Unlimited, approximately 27,500 young people will have benefited from the programme, meaning it will have had a huge impact on young people who wouldn’t normally participate in sport outside of the school environment.
