County Sports Partnership Update
Change 4 Life (C4L) – West Midlands Regional Conference
It has been a year since we first started to see those bright yellow posters on bus stops telling us to get off a stop early and the jelly-babies type characters on the ads on the TV. You might be wondering ‘What is it all about?’ Well this month the Department of Health Regional Office hosted a conference to share the achievements and good practice of the C4L campaign with local co-ordinators, deliverers and supporters from across the region.
Jane Baker, the Deputy Regional Director of Public Health (Dept of Health West Mids) chaired the event and she introduced David Shaw who gave a national update on C4L. He explained that C4L is the brand name for the social marketing campaign led by the Department of Health and closely linked to their “Healthy Weights, Healthy Lives” (2008) plan. This plan was written partly in response to a Foresight report which forecasted that the health of the nation was on track to serious problems in the future with over 60% of the adult population predicted to be clinically obese by 2050. You might be aware of a number of sub-brands to the C4L campaign such as Walk4Life, Bike4Life, Swim4Life etc.
Initially the C4L messages focused on families and particularly those with young children, but new strands are being delivered such as Start4Life (focusing on mums-to-be and babies), and another group which will be targeted is adults aged 45-65 years who are already overweight.
There was also a presentation from the Central Office of Information explaining how they help with the promotion of local campaigns, and the work they have already done linking C4L with Healthy Schools and a successful Walk to Schools campaign.
Delegates were treated to a display of ‘activity’ from the Coventry City FC Cheerleading Group and a Hoop Hop (Hula hooping to hip-hop music) demonstration by Kellee McQuinn from KidTribe and children from a Coventry primary school.
Tony Apicella, National Programme Director of ContinYou (representing the voluntary sector and a national partner with C4L) gave a very thought provoking presentation looking at putting C4L into practice and the successful work of the Breakfast4Life clubs across the country.
If you are thinking about running a local project that can benefit from using the C4L brand you should seriously consider using the Promoting Physical Activity Toolkit website. This is a free, promotional tool which can help you design posters and other useful applications to help you with promotion and raising awareness of your events. The website is; http://www.promotingactivitytoolkit.com
And finally, if you have not yet signed up as a local supporter please go to the C4L website where you can find a wealth of support materials and information; http://www.nhs.uk/Change4life/Pages/Default.aspx

Sportsmatch reopens
Sport England’s Sportsmatch re-opened for applications on the 21st December 2009 for projects that will be delivered in the 2010/11 financial year.
Sport England’s Sportsmatch programme makes awards to not-for-profit organisations running projects at a community level which meet one or both of Sport England’s objectives of Grow or Sustain. They do this through matching eligible sponsorship pound for pound, up to a maximum value of £100,000.
How does it work?
If a sponsor gives £10,000 to its local rugby club to organise new coaching opportunities in the community, Sport England could match that with a grant of £10,000 - thereby doubling the amount of money available to the club. Sport England can match eligible sponsorship which has been given by an eligible company, trust, charity, or private individual. Sponsorship contributions can be either cash or in-kind, but in-kind sponsorship cannot consist of more than 50% of your total sponsorship amount. Projects can be supported by a maximum of five sponsors.
Please visit the following weblink to see if your project meets the Sportsmatch criteria, eligible sponsors, how to apply and what makes a good application.
If you need any further advice please phone the Sport England Funding Helpline on 08458 508 508

Waitrose Community Matters
Each month, Waitrose branches around the country will distribute £1,000 between three local projects, through its ‘community matters’ giving initiative.
Through this scheme, Waitrose will allocate £1,000 a month to each of its 190 branches to distribute amongst three local community projects as chosen by its customers and employees. The scheme is designed to help put a share of their profits back into the local community.
Staff and customers of Waitrose stores all around the country will be encouraged to nominate and vote for three local organisations/projects, including sports clubs, community groups or schools. Each store branch has a ‘community matters champion’ whose role is also to find out potential beneficiaries. The final decision on the three shortlisted organisations is made by PartnerVoice forums (Waitrose’s local democratic bodies).
Once each store has chosen its 3 projects for that month, each customer will be given a token at the checkout that they can place into a box representing their preferred good cause, the amount of money each project receives will be in direct proportion to the number of tokens customers allocate.
To be considered for a donation, why not get in touch with your local Waitrose branch, http://www.waitrose.com/content/waitrose/en/bf_home/bf.html, and pick up a nomination form from the Customer Service Welcome Desk.
This campaign gives local projects and organisations of all sizes the opportunity to compete to become one of the chosen beneficiary projects. For the smaller, less well-known causes it also offers a great publicity boost.

Both property and non-property owning clubs can significantly benefit from the scheme.

Stafford Half Marathon entries already full
The Stafford half marathon has proved more popular than ever with registration now full - and the race still two months away.
Entries came pouring immediately the lines were open and now 2000 runners have signed up to take part. Registration for the event is now closed – well
It is the quickest the half marathon quota has been filled in the race’s 26 year history – despite more runners being allowed to take part since 2009. And it has been the first year without paper entry forms – with competitors signing up online or in person.
Registration opened in November and within the first week more than 400 athletes signed up. Crowds will line the 13.1 mile route on Sunday 21st March to cheer on the competitors. The borough council organised race heads off from the town centre into Stafford’s surrounding countryside, incorporating two steady climbs before returning to the Market Square via Victoria Park.
Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for leisure at Stafford Borough Council, said: “We urged runners to get their entries in early as registration would shut when all the spaces were filled and the response to that has been tremendous.”
Liz Hulse, Event Manager for Stafford Borough Council added: “This event just keeps getting more popular and is now rightly seen as one of the top races in the county’s sporting calendar.”
Also on the day as part of the event programme ‘Handcyclists’ will be competing along the half marathon route, and the School and Family Fun Run will take on a mile with runners in fancy dress.
Everyone will receive medals and other prizes are awarded for various achievements throughout the event. Runners training programmes, tips and a weekly training diary are available at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/halfmarathon.

Stoke at the forefront of sports volunteering

Whether you are retired, looking for a change in career, a student looking for a work placement or

These volunteers can make a massive difference to young people doing the sport, while also having a good time and gaining skills and experience – it’s a real win win.”
Volunteers that choose to take part can start by supporting trained staff and more experienced volunteers in developing and running multi-sports sessions, but then gain qualifications and if they want to progress, to become leaders themselves.
As well as the sports leadership, volunteers can support with administration, youth work and support and project development. Sporting legends honoured by Stoke-on-Trent
Two of Stoke-on-Trent’s most famous sons, Sir Stanley Matthews and Phil Taylor, have been officially inducted into the city’s Sporting Hall of Fame.
The pair are the first two inductees, and Phil and Sir Stan’s daughter Jean Gough were presented with certificates at a ceremony today. Phil and Sir Stan also had their names engraved into a special commemorative honours board as part of the event.
The city council plans to add more famous names from the city’s sporting past to the honours board in years to come, commemorating the service they have given to the city and their legacy in the sporting world.
Phil has just won his 15th World Darts Championship, beating Simon Whitlock 7-3 in the final at the Alexandra Palace in London. Phil has also won twice as many professional tournaments as any other competitor and has won nearly 60 tournaments throughout his career.
On receiving his award he said: “It’s amazing to be in the same company as someone like Sir Stan. I met him plenty of times throughout my career, and I always looked up to him. If ever I did anything wrong he would put me right. I feel really honoured to be here today and to get this award.
“I came from a very simple beginning. I held down three jobs and that was because I had a family to look after, but I’ve worked hard and I’ve got to where I am now. I’d never forget Stoke-on-Trent. I see lots of Robbie Williams and when we get together, that’s all we talk about - Stoke-on-Trent.
“It feels great to represent the city in all the tournaments I play in around the world, it’s an amazing feeling and I feel proud to be honoured alongside someone like Sir Stan.”
The Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Ross Irving, said: “Phil is an excellent representative of the city, and one of which we can all be proud. I don’t think anyone should dispute the fact that darts is a sport, and that makes Phil the greatest player in its history. We are rightfully proud of his achievements and the contribution he has made to the city.”
Sir Stanley Matthews played for Stoke City over 300 times and over 50 times for England. He is the only player to have been knighted while still playing and was the first winner of both the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards. Jean Gough is Sir Stanley Matthews daughter, and spoke of both her father’s legacy, and her pride at him being honoured by the city: “It’s wonderful that Stoke-on-Trent has never forgotten him, and I thank everyone who still remembers him to this day.
“I’m so proud that the city has chosen my dad as one of the first people to be in the Sporting Hall of Fame. He died ten years ago this year, but his legacy goes on here and in all the places he worked to set up the Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation, from America to Africa. I’m so proud of the work he did and that he is being recognised for it here.
“It’s strange to see his picture everywhere and people often ask me what it feels like to be Stanley Matthews’ daughter. I just reply that he was my dad, and everyone loves their dad. That’s what he was to me.”
The city’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Jean Bowers, added: “My family lived near to Sir Stan’s family when we were growing up. He was a great ambassador for the city and he was also a great man. We are so proud to have him as one of the first inductees and his memories as one of the city’s best sportsman will live on.”
For all media enquiries contact Phil Bowers in the PR and Communications Department at Stoke-on-Trent City Council on 01782 232017.

Staffordshire Cricket News
Jack Manuel Plays In Under 19 World Cup
Jack Manuel, the Tamworth and Staffordshire star, has joined an elite band of cricketers by making his debut today for England in the Under 19 world cup game against India.
The match shown live on Sky Sports saw England struggling early against the new ball. Dent and Root were both out early leaving Manuel to join star player Jamie Vince of Hampshire at the crease. After a stand in difficult circumstances Manuel was dismissed for 16 by the impressive Netravalkar quickly followed by Vince for 28.
England were then boosted by a superb century from Durham player Ben Stokes as he scored a superb 100 from 88 balls in the Final total of 246-8 off their 50 overs.
India’s reply was less than convincing. Apart from the opening batsmen only wicketkeeper Sufiyan Shaikh showed any fight, hitting 45 off 72 balls, but it was never going to be enough in reply to England’s total being all out for 215 and leaving England winners by 31 runs.
Opening bowler David Payne was England’s best, taking three for 40, while Man of the Match Stokes chipped in with two including that of the dangerous Mayank Agarwal, to an outstanding catch by outfielder Jack Manuel who raced around the cover boundary and dived full length to his right to take one of the best catches of the tournament.
Jack had missed out on selection for the opening two games of the tournament against Hong Kong and Afghanistan after playing in both the warm up games. Jack then top scored with 43 as England ended their Under 19 World Cup campaign with a close 2 wicket defeat to hosts New Zealand.
England were taken into the 7th/8th play off against New Zealand after defeats to West Indies in the quarter finals then India.
Jack certainly took his chance to impress against New Zealand with a classy knock against some useful bowling as England reached 228 for 9. The hosts reached their target with two wickets and two balls to spare. Jack now returns to his newly signed two year contract with Worcestershire CCC.

Sport England Update
Cycling and athletics lead the way in delivering sporting legacy
The number of adults in England who play sport at least three times a week has reached 6.93 million, continuing the positive trend of the past four years.
Sport England’s Active People Survey 3 shows we are now 115,000 closer to our legacy goal of getting one million people playing more sport by 2012/13. The encouraging news comes despite a fall in the amount of money people are spending on sport and recreation during these challenging economic times.
Key findings from the research include:
"We are delighted that cycling is proving so popular and we welcome all newcomers to our sport,” said Ian Drake, British Cycling’s Chief Executive.
Important to getting more people on their bikes has been the Skyride initiative, launched in partnership with BSkyB and Sport England last summer, which attracted over 100,000 people to mass participation cycling events across Britain."
The once-a-week participation figures for all individual funded sports can be found on our website. Half a dozen sports are already meeting their growth targets for year one, just six months into the new funding period. In addition to cycling and athletics, the other sports are:
There is some concern around participation among disabled people and women. The number of adults with a limiting disability doing regular sport has decreased by 42,800 to 386,700 and regular participation among women has fallen by 61,000 to 2.727 million.
“This is an encouraging set of results,” said Richard Lewis, Sport England’s Chair. “It’s clear we’re making progress both in getting the right sporting opportunities in place, and in changing people’s sporting behaviours.
“Six months into a four-year funding period, we’re delighted that sports such as athletics and cycling are already delivering substantial growth. However, the figures clearly show we face challenges on participation among women and disabled people, and Sport England is committed to tackling these, as demonstrated by our allocation of £10m to projects specifically focused on women's sport."
The number of adults doing athletics at least once a week is up by 127,600.

Breakfast Club Family Grants Programme
As a result of the Blue Peter Mission Nutrition Appeal, ContinYou has a number of grants of £350 available to offer to breakfast clubs. These are intended as 'seed' funds to enable an existing breakfast club to develop a sustainable family dimension - this should include creating an aspect of the breakfast club that will support children and families who are hard to reach or particularly vunerable.
Grants are available thanks to the generosity of children who raised money during the Blue Peter Mission Nutrition appeal which ContinYou took part in, in partnership with the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens and Save the Children. You will find out more about this at http://www.mission-nutrition.co.uk/
How can you apply for the £350 grant? click here.
The deadline for the receipt of applications is 12 noon on Friday 26th February 2010. Grants will be awarded by the end of March 2010.
