The aim of the summit was to explore how the key delivery agencies from across the city can work together to drive up participation in sport and physical activity, thereby improving the health and well being of the people of Stoke-on-Trent.
The event was attended by heads of organisations and directors who have a direct influence upon local policy and outcomes, covering sport, health, regeneration, community services, business, crime prevention, higher and further education and the private sector.
“We can take pride from what has been achieved from this one event in terms of consensus to work together to address a problem which affects us all, and one towards which we can all contribute a solution.” Commented Rauf Mirza Chair of the Regional Sports Board and Stoke resident. “As community leaders we need to ensure this momentum continues to grow and achieves the positive outcomes we all want.”
The summit closed with the attendees each signing a declaration of commitment to work together to champion increased participation, enjoyment and success through sport and active recreation and to deliver on the agreed Action Plan.

Staffordshire County’s local authorities have submitted their first quarter local area agreement performance data via SASSOT for the Children and Young People’s Block.
Focusing directly on improving standards of enjoyment and achievement with particular focus on vulnerable children and young people aged 16 and under, the two performance measures showed positive trends towards achieving their full year targets in the number of attendances at sport and cultural activities/facilities and the number participating in local authority organised sports development and active recreation programmes.
Staffordshire’s local authority areas’ combined attendance at sport and cultural facilities and activities for the first quarter was 338,222 towards its annual target of 1,313,941, whilst the measure of numbers participating in sports development and active recreation programmes organised by the local authorities was 20,098 towards its annual target of 57,122.
Most local authorities commented that they were generally pleased with progress to-date especially in light of the recent poor weather affecting the opening times and availability of some of their leisure facilities and programmes.

In conjunction with NGB’s, Local Authorities and Education partners, Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are working towards the introduction of the Staffordshire Coach Database. This will be open to all coaches, living or working in the Staffordshire area, who have met a set of minimum operating criteria. We anticipate that this database will help to raise the profile and standards of coaching in this area.
Details of registered coaches will be held on an on-line database, which will be searchable by registered schools and Local Authority Sports Development Officers, to help them fill coaching vacancies within their organisations. The list will not be a central employment system and coach details will be issued on the understanding that employers will still be responsible for following good employment practice when recruiting coaches from the list.

As well as the benefit of enhanced employment opportunities, registered Coaches will receive advice and improved access to training. They will also qualify for a discount at events such as the Staffordshire Coaching Conference.
