Staffordshire Moorlands District Council

Girls Football - County Championships

Girls Schools County Championships 2007

On Tuesday 10th July 2007, 22 school teams representing 7 Districts from across the County came together at Rowley Park in Stafford to compete to be the Girls Football School County Champions for 2007.

Girls Football Tournament

Girls aged from 8 – 15 years old had the opportunity to represent their school, playing against girls from the same age group.

Each team at the Finals had already competed in, and won, their local District Girls Football Competitions, organised by Local District Sports Development Teams and School Sports Partnerships.

Each of the schools taking part were representing the District from where their school is based, allowing for both Primary, Middle and High Schools to play on the day as there were four separate age group competitions, (School) Years 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 and 9&10.

All matches were played on Mini Soccer pitches, 6-a-side, with each team playing one another. The first group matches kicked off at 10.30am, with each age group playing on their own separate pitch.

After all of the group matches had been completed, the top 4 teams from each age group then went forward to play in the Semi-Finals, ultimately deciding which teams would then go on to play in the finals.

The Years 3&4 competition had a total of 5 teams competing against each other. The final came down to the teams representing South Staffordshire (St Nicholas Primary) and East Staffordshire (Winshill Primary), but after a tightly fought game, South Staffordshire emerged with the victory, and the Years 3&4 County Champions crown.

The finals of the Years 5&6, 7&8 and 9&10 competitions were all so close to call that, after normal time and extra time, each of the finals had to be unfortunately decided by penalty shoot outs.

The results for each of the age groups were:

There was also a Fair Play trophy available for one school in each age group. The Fair Play trophy was decided by the Referees on the individual pitches, as well as the staff present on the day.

The schools awarded the Fair Play trophies were:

Years 5&6

Years 7&8

Overall, the finals day provided over 180 girls with the opportunity to represent their school and participate in a County Competition. The day also provided the Staffordshire FA to promote Girls and Women’s initiative’s and raise awareness of the upcoming Women’s World Cup, which is taking place in China in September.

Thank you to all of the schools who participated at the Finals, as well as to all of the schools who participated in the Local District Competitions. I would also like to pass on my thanks to the organisers from the Local Districts in the County for their hard work and support to the competition as a whole.
