Sport England Update
Recruitment drive for grassroots coaches
A drive to bring 10,000 new coaches into grassroots sport is benefiting young sports enthusiasts across England, with 2,400 coaches recruited in the six months since the programme went live.
Recruit into Coaching is being delivered by Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust as part of the Government's PE and Sport Strategy for Young People.
The first figures for our flagship Sport Unlimited programme demonstrate the power of giving young people the freedom to choose the sports they play outside of school.
177,358 young people have already completed 10-week sports courses through Sport Unlimited. The programme has an important role to play in delivering a lasting sporting legacy from London 2012, inspiring more youngsters to become regular sports participants.
Fourteen NGBs announced themselves to Parliament last week as "set and ready" to deliver a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The sports, ranging from archery to fencing, have all received Sport England four-year funding for the first time this year, and were hosted by Andy Reed MP at an event to explore how best to promote sport to parliamentarians.
150 of the north east's most promising sportsmen and women are to benefit from a new elite training programme designed to help them get to the top of their game.
The programme, which will see strength and conditioning training made available to local talent, is being provided by Sport England, the English Institute of Sport and five north east universities.
