The ASA reveals its role in the government's free swimming initiative and the aquatic workforce audit |
On Tuesday 14th July, local authorities and pool providers were invited to attend the ASA Roadshow in Cannock. This was one of many to be held across the country to launch the new ASA Strategy 2009-2013 and to explain how the recent re-structure will support the ASA’s work towards a culture change in swimming.
With financial support from five Government departments (including Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Department of Health), the Free Swimming Lessons Programme will target people aged 11 and over who are unable to swim or lack confidence in the water. A course of lessons will provide six hours of tuition by a Level 2 qualified teacher.
A network of 49 Swimming Co-ordinators has been put in place by the ASA in partnership with Sport England and the Government. These Co-ordinators will be working at a county level to support the Free Swimming Lessons Programme and to further develop the sport of swimming.
