Mini Olympics on offer for Cheslyn Hay's family of primary schools |
The annual Mini Olympics for the Cheslyn Hay family of primary schools was a resounding success on a hot June day with 5 schools represented by over 100 pupils playing cricket, rounders and athletics.
Year 3 & 4 pupils from Cheslyn Hay, Glenthorne, Havergal, Whitgreave and St John’s splashed on the sun screen and donned hats to take part in a competition filled day at Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School. Sixteen committed young leaders from the high school made this a special Festival of Sport for the youngsters, organising, umpiring, and scoring efficiently and doing any job that came up with energy and enthusiasm. The Young Leaders were a credit to the school and the primary school children responded so readily to them. Every youngster was involved in round robin competitions of either rounders or kwik cricket in the morning and in the afternoon the emphasis shifted from team events to individual competition with the athletics.
St John’s Essington won all their 4 cricket matches, beating Havergal closely in the deciding match. In the rounders, Glenthorne Primary – the smallest school in the family – took the trophy with 4 wins from 4 matches. The athletics was a closer affair with the top 3 schools separated by only 2 points and Cheslyn Hay just beating off a strong challenge from Havergal and St John’s to take the trophy.
Eric Field, the SSCo for Cheslyn Hay said “The success of these Olympics was a result of the hard work of the Young Leaders, the energy and enthusiasm of the participants and the support of the primary school staff.

Young Ambassadors get out and about
Young Ambassadors from Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School went out to the family primary schools during National School Sports Week to work with key stage 2 pupils on the Olympic Games, London 2012, and the Olympic/Paralympic values.
Chris and James Perrin devised their own presentation which included the history of the Olympics, facts about the Games, recent venues focussing on London 2012, and Olympic ideals and values. They utilised the Athens, Olympic Dreams, and the Lloyds TSB Sports week DVDs to inspire their audiences and finished with the pupils making a Sporting Pledge to get more involved in Sport.

Teachers at Whitgreave and St John’s, Essington were very impressed with the preparation work done and with the quality and maturity of the 45 minute presentation. Pupils were fully involved throughout the session in discussion, question and answer work, and preparing individual pledges.
Eric Field, SSCo for Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School acknowledges that these two Young Ambassadors, who presented at the Regional Young Ambassador Conference at the Ricoh Arena in October 2009, are exceptional Leaders and have set a high benchmark for Cheslyn Hay’s Gold YA to aspire to.
