

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Sports Awards 2010 |
A glittering evening of celebration was held at the Three Horseshoes Inn & Country Hotel on 24th June. The event, hosted by Verity Hilton and Sam Plank from Moorlands Radio, was to praise the local sportsmen and women of the Moorlands and also
The winners were:
Alton Towers Resort Junior Sports Achiever: Joshua Tipper – Joshua has competed in many Badminton England Silver circuit tournaments with the highlights being gold medals at Durham & Teeside U17, Yorkshire U17, and Burton Yelex Bonanza U17 and Adult. The rest of his year has seen many silver medals and also representing Staffordshire.
Sports Team/Club: Leek Colts Rugby Team – Leek Colts have had a successful year, being the runners up in both the Staffordshire U18 league and league cup. They have been awarded the Fair Play award by Staffordshire RFU and have also represented Staffordshire U18’s in the National Bowl competition. Three members of the team also played for Staffordshire Colts U18’s and one member went on to represent Staffordshire at the Midlands trials.
Ted Perry Senior Sports Achiever: Matthew Clowes – Matthew is a highly accomplished runner, competing on both the UK and European stage. In cross country, he is the County U20 and Senior Champion, Midlands U20 Champion and within the top 25 Nationally at U20. On the track he is county 5k U20 Champion, and Midlands 3k U20 Champion. He has run for England at the World Mountain Grand Prix in Slovenia and has aspirations to be selected for the European and World Mountain championship team. Totally committed to his training he has worked extremely hard to get to where he is today.
Staffordshire Moorlands Sports Coach: Michael Grimley – Michael has been with Blythe Cricket Club as a member for nearly 30 years and is now deeply entrenched within the coaching staff. He recently updated his qualifications to ensure he can give his players the best coaching advice. He currently coaches the Blythe U17’s and has taken the current team since they were 9 or 10 years old. He also coaches the Blythe U11 and the U19 Eastern Team in the North Staffs and South Cheshire Premier Cricket League. He coaches at local schools and assists with the Blythe girls team and this has lead to him also being asked to help coach the County girls U15 squad.
Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent Volunteer: Phil Shemilt – Phil has been involved with Endon Cricket Club for about 10 years and over this time he has been involved with many aspects of the club. Over 2009 he helped the club through its lengthy and successful Clubmark application and also helped acquire funding for new windows for the pavilion. He has also helped the club overcome many obstacles to ensure the purchase of a neighbouring field so the club can expand and continue to build on its recent success.
Alan Hurst Contribution to Sport: Bernard Broadhurst – Bernard has had a massive part to play in the development and success of Leek Swimming Club over the past 37 years. After initially helping on the poolside, he went on to qualify as a timekeeper and judge, and then became a Starter and National Referee in 1984. For many years Bernard and his wife were the only qualified officials at Leek ASC. Since these humble beginnings he went on to become the Northern Counties National and District Gala Master of Ceremonies, and has officiated at various International meets. He has been a member of the Leek ASC committee since 1974 and is now its President, and was also the Northern Counties President. He has been presented with an ASA Silver Badge in 1999 for services to swimming and is now a Life Member of Staffordshire ASA in recognition of his services to swimming.

There was also a special presentation made to Sheen Farmers Tug of War team who are the current indoor 640kg World Champions. They went to Italy in February 2010 to represent England in the World Indoor Championships. They sailed through the group stages (including beating Serbia in 6 and 8 seconds) then beat the Netherlands to face Scotland in the final. After a hard fought battle Sheen came out victorious, winning by 2 ends to nil and being crowned Wold Champions.
