SASSOT Sports Club Accreditation Funding Re-opens
SASSOT have relaunched the Sports Club Accreditation funding to increase the number of sports clubs being accredited or re-accredited with Clubmark/NGB accreditation and which can also be used for clubs to achieve a higher level of their current accreditation if appropriate.
SASSOT’s Executive Board agreed at their meeting on the 27th July to amalgamate the existing Club Accreditation and Coach Scholarships funding into a single application process. Up to £600 of funding is now available to sports clubs who require financial assistance to achieve and pass their accreditation criteria and which now includes funding for coach qualifications. All sports clubs benefiting from the funding must be based within Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to qualify and commit to achieving accreditation within 9 months.
The SASSOT Sports Club Accreditation funding scheme was launched in September 2009 and so far a total of £16,455.80 has been distributed to 64 sports clubs to help them achieve Clubmark accreditation or re-accreditation. For a list of those clubs awarded funding please click here.
Please click here for further guidance notes and how to apply.
Applications can only be submitted electronically and the 1st round of applications must be submitted to me by Wednesday 05th October 2011.

Need Local Data or Measurement Tools? Why Not Use ‘In It For The Long Run’ Sport England’s Online Resource Toolkit?
Community Sport: in it for the long run is a new online resource aimed at helping local authorities prepare and plan for the challenges and opportunities they face. The resource is designed around four fundamental questions local authorities are asking about community sport:
For each question, Sport England have summarised the evidence you need to provide and drawn together lists of new and existing tools and guidance to help you find it. There are also case studies to help demonstrate how some councils have tackled particular issues and used Sport England tools and services to help them do so.
One of the tools developed is the 'Local Sport Profile' tool. This tool helps local authorities in England to generate a sporting profile for their area in the form of charts and tables, bringing together data on sporting participation and provision. This data is fundamental to local authorities and other partners involved in developing and delivering sporting opportunities in their communities. The profiles were introduced in Autumn 2010 and updated in March 2011 to include data from Active People Survey 4 released in December 2010.
If you would like further information on the toolkit or have any additional training needs around the use of Active People or Market Segmentation Toolkits please contact Naomi Bird who can provide individual training support and advice.

Staffordshire schools celebrate county's lead in Olympic programme take-up
A school which was the first in the Staffordshire to sign up to a national Olympic 2012 programme is helping to celebrate the county’s position as a regional leader. Staffordshire has more schools signed up to the Get Set 2012 programme than any other area across the West Midlands region. Schools receive a range of educational resources from the Games organising committee. Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture Pat Corfield visited Cardinal Griffin Catholic High School in Cannock for an Olympic themed event.
There are 339 schools in Staffordshire now registered for the scheme and 148 of these have successfully applied to join the Get Set Network – the highest in the West Midlands and one of the highest nationally. These schools are already building the Olympic and Paralympic values into their curriculum in celebration of London 2012. There are 400 schools in the county.

National Olympic Day dominates in East Staffordshire
Thursday 23 June saw schools in East Staffordshire participating in a number of sporting events to celebrate National Olympics Day. With just over a year remaining until London 2012, pupils from the ages of 4–19 took part in Olympic runs and cycling events, multi sports festivals and dance shows to create a fantastic sporting festival. Funded through the Big Lottery Awards for All programme, obtained by the East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership, clusters of schools took part in different events following careful local planning.
As part of the event, pupils and staff, (flanked by two PSCO’s) from Blessed Robert Sutton started an 8 mile relay run from their school to a number of primary schools, passing their Olympic torches and picking up different groups of young athletes along the way, all of whom ran 1.5 -2 miles within the town. After 2 ? hours of running, pupils finished with a cross country leg around Robert Sutton and then were treated to a multi skills festival led by year 8 pupils from the school.
Julie Finney from St Edwards summed up the event by saying ... “the young sports leaders were excellent and our pupils in year five had a great afternoon and returned to school singing the praises of the staff and pupils at Blessed Robert Sutton. The organisation of the event was second to none!”
At the same time, Year 7 pupils from Paulet High School were taking part in their own run round their school grounds with pupils from Violet Way, Riverview and Edge Hill. 600 pupils were treated to a mass “wake up, shake up” warm up by the Paulet Young Ambassadors prior to the event and in the afternoon also took part in a dance festival. These schools also produced a partnership Olympic flag which was presented to each school by Tracy Hanson, SSCo at Paulet who had organised the event for the schools. The flag featured a logo designed by a pupil from each school, reflecting their school association with the Olympic Values.
Pupils from schools close to Paget High School also took part an Olympic run with Burton College students supporting runners from a number of local schools. Pupils from Paget also organised their own sports festivals following the run, organising and leading all the activities being delivered. A cross curricular approach was taken in the schools with the arts department designing and making torches for the schools to use on the day.
Seven schools in the De Ferrers Cluster took part in their own run. Representing various countries around the world where previous Olympic Games have taken place, the schools participated in a relay race using torches designed by the De Ferrers Academy D&T department as their batons. Year 7 pupils also supported the event cheering on those who were taking part.
The Middle Schools in Uttoxeter took part in a cycling and running event involving over 180 pupils, with the winning team coming from Oldfields Hall Middle School.
John Taylor students took part in their own fancy dress relay race whilst their local primary schools all organised their own individual events. At Mosley Primary Schools, pupils collectively ran a total of 94 miles during the day, their Primary Link Teacher Hannah Chapman said, “we couldn’t stop them running, the whole school just ran and ran. It was fantastic."

Girls Active Event in Stafford and Race for Life
Tuesday 12th July, 2011
Over 100 girls descended upon Stafford Sports College for a Midlands regional Girls Active event today. The day organised by the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership saw girls from all over the region enjoy a variety of activities including Mountain Biking, Climbing, Cheerleading, Trampolining, Badminton and Soccer Aerobics.
Gail Emms, Olympic Silver Medalist and local Olympian (Sydney 2000) Kerri Lees supported the girls in all activities.
The day started with Steve Glover, Partnership Development Manager challenging girls to drive participation in sport in their own and neighbouring schools. Girls thoroughly enjoyed all activities and felt totally motivated to enthuse girls in their own schools. One such girl is moving to Scotland in the near future and stated her ambition was to form a Girls Active group in her new school. Gail and Kerri were a huge inspiration to all girls and offered advice and tips to all throughout the day. Following the activities all girls (including Gail and Kerri) joined a further 100 girls plus many more to complete the Race for Life in Stafford. The 5k race saw many dressed in pink enjoy a inspirational occasion. Gail and Kerri even managed to finish in the top ten places and one of the local girls finish in fourth place!
Steve Glover stated, "The day was such an inspiration. The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves but most importantly left with the ambition to see more girls participate in sport. Next year we hope to run similar events and hope to see 500 plus girls run the Race for Life."

Stafford pupils try out wheelchair basketball
On Friday 1st July, Sir Graham Balfour School celebrated Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week with something a little bit different - wheelchair basketball.
Two representatives from the Stoke Spitfires Wheelchair Basketball team visited the Stafford school (along with some spare wheelchairs) and worked with pupils. The relaxed, yet competitive atmopshere could have fooled any spectator into thinking they were watching a training session. The coaches umpired the games as they would any normal match, giving helpful advice and feedback to the pupils.
Everyone was clearly having fun. Rowan Softley, a Year 9 pupil said: “The best thing about it was gliding along, although turning was difficult. I really enjoyed it!”
Andrew Flowers, Vice Chairman of the Stoke Spitfires, also plays in a team. He plays as a guard, whose job is to keep the opposing defence away from his team’s tall attacking players. He also mentioned how he finds that the speed of wheelchair basketball makes it more exciting!
When asked how he found working with the Sir Graham Balfour students, he said it was “really good, and enjoyable” whilst also mentioning that anyone can get involved in this unique sport by looking up Stoke Spitfires Wheelchair Basketball Team on Facebook.
If you want to find out more about wheelchair basketball in general, visit the Great British Wheelchair Basketball Association’s website at www.gbwba.org.uk.

Meet Mark Fosbrook A disabled man who competes in elite level sport
Mark was born with no feet or ankles, and two fingers on each hand. But this hardly affects him; as he has never known differently, he has been able to adapt to situations. For example, he can type, write, and even play on his xBox and PlayStation, which has been made easier since a charity called Remap adapted his controller and supplied him with plug in pedals to operate the shoulder buttons.
He is currently training to become a part of the Great British Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team, fitting a vigorous training session around a full time job. He manages to cram in over twelve hours of fitness, shooting, and technical training a week, as well as matches at the weekends!
Mark Fosbrook
Always competitive, Mark realised from a young age that sport was an ideal platform to show that his disability did not affect or bother him. Discovering disability sport at about 14, he soon found his talent. His focused mind drove him on to look into going further.
Mark loves competing at elite level in sport, because the competition means you push yourself as hard as you can. He also enjoys representing his country and walking out to cheering crowds - who wouldn’t? Mentioning the connotations people have of elite level sport, he notes how it is thought of as a glamourous lifestyle, full of seeing the world and enjoying yourself. Far from it - don’t forget he is there to do a job, not on holiday. Also, constantly pushing your body to the limit means there are aches and pains that are always there.
Finally summing up, he says: "Pain is temporary, but honour is permanent.” And I couldn’t have chosen better words myself.
Eden Baker - pupil at Sir Graham Balfour

News from Staffordshire Cricket
Easy Cricket – The New Way For Adult Participation What is Easy Cricket?
Easy Cricket is more of a concept than a game. As per its title, Easy Cricket is just that – easy!
To encourage new people to play cricket and lapsed players to pick up a bat again, the concept is to get people playing within an environment that is familiar and convenient to them.
It might be during a lunch break at work or after work. It could be in between lectures at University, or in the park with friends on a weekend, or for parents who are watching their kids play or train at a cricket club?
Reginald Mitchell Wins Regional Prize
Reginald Mitchell Primary from Kidsgrove won the Regional Finals of the ASDA Girls Kwik Cricket Competition.
The school went through to the national finals held on Tuesday 19th July at Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
Reginald Mitchell beat teams from Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Warwickshire to secure their place in the national finals.
Prior to the Regional competition the girls took part in the Staffordshire final (all entrants pictured above) and won all 5 games at Moddershall.
By participating in this event over the weekend of 26th -29th August Staffordshire cricket clubs have the potential to raise significant amounts of funding that they can then reinvest into their club ideally as part of NWCF 2012.
There are some great prizes already on offer and we will shortly produce flyers and a quiz for clubs to use.
The following clubs are already registered in Staffordshire :
Please see more and register HERE

News from Stoke-on-Trent
StreetGames volunteer wins England’s Young Volunteer of the year
Jason Sarginson (25) who has been volunteering with the Stoke StreetGames project has been awarded with both the West Midland’s and England’s Young Volunteer of the Year Award (sponsored by the Co-op). This is a fantastic achievement and a great way of acknowledging all his hard work and efforts over the last 12 months.
Jason began volunteering with the StreetGames programme delivered by the sport and leisure section of the city council in April 2010. He was extremely enthusiastic and within a month was helping coaches to delivers sessions all across the city nearly every day of the week. Jason lived at the Salvation Army when he began volunteering and had little aspiration or motivation for life. However he had always played and been extremely enthusiastic about sport. The volunteering that he did with StreetGames gave him aspirations to become a coach and got him motivated to help out the young people who attended the sessions.
Jason helped out with festivals in Stoke at Northwood Stadium and in the West Midlands at Nechells Leisure Centre, Birmingham. He also began volunteering in the office, helping staff with marketing and inputting data. He has received a number of accolades due to his hard work. He has previously been awarded the Stoke-on-Trent Young Volunteer of the Year Award and the Local Hero Award from StreetGames National.
The awards ceremony for the West Midlands Young Volunteer of the Year Award (run by StreetGames) was on 1 June at the Banks’s Stadium, home of Walsall Football Club. Jason was presented with the certificate by Diane Modahl the former Olympic athlete and Commonwealth Gold Medalist. The 7 regional winners were then entered in for the England’s Volunteer of the year award that would encompass volunteers from over 100 projects. Again Jason was fortunate enough to win this award, stating “I am extremely proud and happy that I have won this award”. Although Jason has gone on to work full time as a sports coach at PVFC he still continues to volunteer on the StreetGames programme as he has a real passion for the programme and acts as a positive role model to the young people who attend.
To find out how you can become a volunteer please e-mail David Hardwick on david.hardwick@stoke.gov.uk or visit the fan page on facebook StreetGames Stoke-on-Trent.
Fenton Park football match helps raise funds for the Great Britain National Disabilities Display Team
Stoke-on-Trent City Council's Sport and Leisure department invited supporters of Stoke City FC and Manchester Utd FC to a charity football match at Fenton Park in July to raise funds for disabled gymnasts - The Great Britain National Disabilities Display Team. The Great Britain National Disabilities Display Team is made up of youngsters with Downs Syndrome and are hoping to fly out to Switzerland in late July for an International competition.
Rival football fans went toe to toe in a series of games played in the park in a competitive but good humoured spirit. Organiser of the fund raiser, Richard Allen (aged 25 from Fenton) said “We have managed to raise £560 and more is still to come in”.
The football matches saw Manchester Utd supporters win in both the women’s and men’s games while the children took victory for Stoke City.

Sport England Update
Sport England is committed to the creation of a world-leading community sport environment. This means focusing their investment on organisations and projects that will grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.
They have a number of funding programmes open to a wide range of organisations. These include sports clubs, voluntary or community organisations, local authorities, schools, colleges and universities.
The funding programmes that are currently open are:
NEW
Sport England have launched Inspired Facilities - a key part of the Places People Play programme which will deliver a mass participation sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Inspired Facilities will provide relatively small capital grants to refurbish and improve the places where people play sport, improving their sporting experience and encouraging more people to get involved.
These will be local projects developed and delivered predominantly by community and voluntary sector groups and applications can be submitted by organisations entitled to receive public funding, voluntary or community organisations, local authorities, sports clubs, playing field associations and education establishments.
Projects will range from building modernisations and extensions, sports equipment and lighting through to sustainability improvements that reduce carbon footprints and running costs.
The programme will be open for Round one applications in August 2011. http://www.sportengland.org/about_us/places_people_play/inspired_facilities.aspx
The Sport England Small Grants Programme uses lottery funding to make awards of between £300 and £10,000 to not-for-profit organisations to deliver new community projects to either grow or sustain participation in sport or to support talent development.
This application is worth spending a little time over and there are plenty of resources available on the website to help guide you through the process.

Sportsmatch makes awards to not-for-profit organisations that have secured sponsorship to deliver new community projects to grow or sustain participation in sport.
Sportsmatch uses money from the government to encourage new sponsorship of grassroots community sport.
Awards of between £1,000 and £100,000 can be made to match funding from no more than five sponsors, with each sponsor contributing a minimum of £1,000. Sport England funding for the project must be spent by 31 March 2012.

To improve the way expertise on disability sport is shared, EFDS will now act as a single point of contact for national governing bodies of sport and other sporting groups. What’s in the box?
Youthbox www.youthbox.info is the county council’s brand new website for young people in Staffordshire.
The site is now available on the web and is the place to go if young people aged 11 - 19 want help and advice for when they grow up, to search for things to do or simply want to share their own work.
Information about services available to young people, news and local projects will be available, as well as all the latest on what other young people are up to across the region. It is also be the main point of call for all jobs, careers and learning advice, replacing the Staffordshire Connexions website.
There will also be regular competitions where young people can submit their own work to win some top prizes.
We spoke to over 500 young people, asking them what information they would like to see on this site and how they want it to look. The result is what you see before you!
However, we recognise that we won’t be able to cover everything ourselves and that all our partners will have a good idea about where we could and should be improving the website with links or information about local support, services, initiatives and projects that you are involved in.
This will not only give you free publicity but will also give your service the opportunity to get key information out to your target audience.
Please take a look at www.youthbox.info and send in your ideas, feedback and submissions to youthbox@staffordshire.gov.uk.
