Staffordshire Moorlands District Council

Longton Rugby Club new women's team

Longton Rugby Club has added, alongside their successful portfolio of men’s & juniors teams, a new women’s team.

The women moved to Longton RUFC after struggling to find adequate training facilities in the local area. The new development at Trentham Fields, with its array of pitches, spacious changing rooms and brand new clubhouse, is more than able to accommodate the addition to the club.

Women’s rugby is a relatively new sport with the first ever recognised women's international rugby union match being played in the Netherlands, between the Netherlands and France in 1982. Since then the sport has continuted to grow and develop around the world with more and more women and girls taking up the sport each year.

 Longton Women's Rugby Club

Women's rugby union is identical to the men's game - same rules, same sized pitch, same equipment.

Anyone of any ability or fitness level is welcome to come down to training sessions, whether it is just to watch or to get stuck in, new members are always greeted with a warm welcome!

There are differing levels in the team at the moment with beginners that have never even picked up a rugby ball before to players that have represented the West Midlands in regional competitions.

Training is usually held on a Tuesday and Thursday with league games played on a Sunday.

All you need to bring with you to join in is clothes to train in that you don’t mind getting dirty, rugby/football boots and a gum shield (if you have them) and an enthusiastic attitude!
