Mini Olympics at Stafford Sports College

Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership are delighted to announce the launch event of the National School Sport week in Stafford.

The purpose of National School Sport Week is to celebrate all that has been achieved in PE and School Sport over the last year.  This includes Young People's participation, Young People's achievements and talent in PE & Sport and the contribution made by young leaders and volunteers and all those enabling Young People to achieve their potential.

National School Sport week is also held to launch new initiatives and developments in PE and school sport.  This summer will see the launch of new innovative developments in Intra School Competition, as well as the launch of the National Network of Competition Managers for inter-school competition.

It is a way of profiling all the amazing things that are happening in PE and school sport nationally and to encourage all schools to raise the profile at a local level.

The launch event took place at Stafford Sports College on Friday 27th June.  There were approximately 160 young people participating in a mini Olympics, which involved a collection of events, and 80 sports leaders assisted with the organisation.

The event commenced with a grand opening ceremony involving a samba band, dance groups, soloists and speeches.  Special guests on hand were a variety of sporting celebrities, David Kidney MP, The Mayor of Stafford, County and Borough Councillors, School Governors and Staffordshire 2012 Olympic Coordinators.

This high profile event consisted of approximately 8 sports, including football, rowing, tug of war, badminton, archery, athletics.  All young people had the opportunity to take part in the various sports, with winners being rewarded with medals and certificates.
