Staffordshire University produce valuable literature review
"A review of selected (2002-07) academic and industry based research that has the potential to influence the sport and active recreation agenda in Staffordshire."
Background
Initially in 2007 a benchmarking exercise was carried out by Staffordshire University to establish and compare current practice in 4 County Sports Partnerships including Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent, Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, Derbyshire Sport and Cambridgeshire Living Sport. A comparison was
undertaken regarding their structures, lines of communication and management processes in order to highlight models of 'best practice'. In addition Directors and Chief Executive Officers were asked what the main issues that face the partnership are.
This initial study provided the basis for a review of literature that would enable the CSP to develop a library of research and identify potential areas requiring research. The research would also provide additional evidence to better inform future Policy Development and Action Planning as well as identifying areas of good practice and dissemination of information to partners.
SASSOT commissioned Staffordshire University to identify a starting point in the review of literature to support the role that sport plays in three associated policy areas:
Equality: barriers to participation for hard-to-reach groups
The main health concerns caused by physical inactivity and childhood obesity
Where sport has featured as a catalyst or key element of regeneration programmes
Further Research
The study has sought to develop a library of research whilst also identifying potential areas requiring further enquiry. These areas include:
Barriers to participation for women within black, minority and ethnic groups
Barriers to participation for the elderly
The impact of physical inactivity at the preschool and junior school age range
Consultation
SASSOT plans to implement the second phase of this research by conducting further review of the identified areas above. SASSOT is currently undertaking a consultation period to identify current research needs of key partners to ensure findings can effectively inform policy development and action planning. The full literature review is now available on the Sport Across Staffordshire &
Stoke-on-Trent website www.sportacrossstaffordshire.co.uk
