Workshops
As stated previously, changes are continually made as a result from the needs and requirements from clubs etc. You will note that there have been 2 new additions to the programme they are Multiskills Inclusion (22 July) and a FREE Positive Management (23 July) session. Both have been arranged at the Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton upon Trent.
To allow for the opportunity for all to access the workshops, various locations have been booked all around the Staffordshire County. We do hope that it continues to be an asset to your continuing professional development within the world of sport.
As always we do advise that as some sports have more stringent First Aid requirements for Clubmark and coaching purposes, all delegates should check with their NGB before enrolling on these workshops in order to avoid disappointment after the event.
Can I please ask that you check the website on a regular basis as updates are always being made to dates and venues.
Please be advised that in cases of cancellations, a 5 working day notice period is required. Delegates can opt to change to another workshop or alternatively send another representative.

The Special Schools Sports festival organised by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) continues to go from strength to strength and will be in its eighth year when it is held on Thursday 02nd July at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton upon Trent.
The date was chosen so that it ties in with the Youth Sport Trust’s National School Sport week, which starts on Monday 29th June. The aim of this week is to celebrate all that has been achieved in PE and School Sport and encourage all schools to raise the profile of PE & School Sport at a local level.
The Special Schools Sports Festival, which is being sponsored by Staffordshire telecommunications company Qualitel, will feature coaching sessions and mini competitions in athletics, cricket, football, badminton, tag rugby, canoeing and archery.
The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Councillor Geoff Morrison and former Great Britain Paralympian, Marcus Asbury will be supporting the athletes on the day.
SASSOT’s Club Development Manager, Chris Turner commented: “We’re delighted with the response to this year’s festival. Step into Sport success throughout Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent
Step into Sport is part of the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). Step into Sport targets 11–19 year olds by providing a simple framework of co-ordinated opportunities at a local level, to enable young people to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership and volunteering in sport.
The purpose of the Step into Sport programme is to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of young people engaged in volunteering and leadership, with consequent benefits to schools, clubs, the community and the young people themselves. In essence the Step into Sport programme is the tool, which enables schools and sports clubs to grow young people as leaders and deploy them as active volunteers both within the school and community settings.
All of the 10 School Sport Partnerships in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are involved in the Step into Sport programme and from the 07/08 cohort of young volunteers involved, 100 students have volunteered within a community sports placement.
SASSOT would like to congratulate these young volunteers for the commitment they have shown to their sports volunteer placement and by developing their leadership skills though sport.
SASSOT recognises that the critical role of volunteers is fundamental for sport to continue to thrive throughout the sub-region and the need for better support and investment in the volunteer workforce.
The challenge for sports clubs is to recruit the expected increase in the number of volunteers to meet the needs of the growing numbers of people wishing to participate in sport.
If you are a sports club / organisation who is interested in taking a Step into Sport volunteer or for further information please contact:

Trentham Watersports groups celebrate funding
Watersports groups in Trentham are celebrating receiving thousands of pounds worth of funding for boats, equipment and the fitting out of their new boathouse.
Funding for boat racking has been received by Trentham Watersports Association(TWA) from Coalfields Regeneration and Staffordshire Community Foundation (Grassroots Grant) totalling £10,000 and £3,500 respectively. Without this funding for purpose-built racking, the three clubs that make up the TWA – Trentham Boat Club (TBC), Trentham Canoe Club (TCC) and Eccleshall Scouts – would not have been able to move into their new boathouse at the south end of Trentham lake.
TWA chair, Ken Walters says: “Without the support from Coalfields Regeneration, Staffordshire Community Foundation , the fundraising efforts of the club and the support and assistance from Pro-Dek Storage Systems, we wouldn’t have the racking in place that we need. As a result of this funding we have been able to design to our requirements racking for the rowing boats and canoes.”
To cope with the extra numbers generated by the upgrade in facilities and interest created by the Olympics, Trentham Canoe Club are soon to take delivery of two junior K4 boats (4-seater racing kayaks), a kayaking ergo and some paddles and Trentham Outrigger Canoe Group are soon to get three outrigger single canoes. Both are thanks to £5,000 grants from the Staffordshire Community Foundation.
In addition, the TWA has recently received nearly £1000 from O2 Its Your Community for teaching and presentation equipment for the new meeting and teaching room in the community facility.
TWA and TCC Secretary, Ruth Holdway, says: “It’s an exciting time for all the clubs, moving into the new boathouse, receiving new boats and preparing for a major rowing event. It’s been hard work getting all the funding in place and getting the building finished in time but now it is beginning to pay off.” She added: “I’m really looking forward to the K4s arriving as they make crew-boat racing fun for the juniors.”
The TWA moved into their new purpose-built boatstore and associated facilities at the south end of Trentham lake within the Trentham Estate two weeks ago with the clubs busy erecting the boat-racking and fitting out the interior ready for TBC’s first regatta on the lake. The clubhouse will officially be opened in September.

South Staffordshire pupils hit the heights in trampoline competition
Local school pupils demonstrated their gymnastic skills recently when taking part in the South Staffordshire School Sport Partnership inaugural trampolining competition held at Edgecliff High School.
75 pupils ranging from years 7 to 11 who attend Wolgarston, Ounsdale, Codsall, Cheslyn Hay and Edgecliff High Schools performed in a team and individual event. Each school had to provide a team of 15 trampolinists to perform in 3 graded routines. The competition was for beginners, intermediate, advanced.
Each school had the opportunity to practise during lunchtimes with teachers prior to the event.
Additional coaching prior to the competition was funded from the Get Set Scheme and linked to clubs in the partnership and many teachers provided Out of School Hours Learning opportunities for their young people to practise.
The event was overseen by 3 judges:
The funding for the trophies came from England Gymnastics.
The team competition was won by Edgecliff High School with individual winners from 4 different High Schools.
Edgecliff High School provided all equipment and the leaders were excellent in the way they helped organise with the smooth running of the event.
“This successful event came from the requests of several School Sport Coordinators in the Partnership and from that we have developed a new competition which will spread across the County in coming years” said Nick Richards Competition Manager, South Staffordshire/Stafford and Stone.
Many thanks to all staff who were involved with the development and running of this competition.

Tamworth coaches claim their inaugural conference as a success
Tamworth School Sport Partnership (SSP) hosted their inaugural Coaches Conference on Wednesday 3rd June at the Castle Hotel, Tamworth. The conference, which was jointly organised by Ian Smith (Coach Manager for the Tamworth SSP) and Ben Bulleyment (PDM, Tamworth SSP) to support coach development for colleagues who deliver sessions as part of the extensive Out of Hours School Learning (OHSL) programme planned and monitored by the Partnership.
The main aims of the morning were to share information relating to key aspects of physical education, school sport and the 5 hour offer and the role of coaches within this and to allow coaches the opportunity to network with each other and share leading practice. Presentations and workshops based around the background and current positioning of PESSYP within the town, information on how coaches should be linking with schools in terms of ensuring safe practice in PE and current and upcoming developments based around the National Curriculum PE were discussed along with information on the Coaches Database and Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
Staff from the main coaching agencies who work closely with the SSP and Tamworth schools, including PE Solutions, Progressive Sports and T.K.A Kick-Boxing along with individual coaches who work as part of the extended SSP team attended and claimed the day was a very positive professional development opportunity.
Nick Price from Progressive Sports claimed the day was “very useful and well organised. I am particularly interested in further developing opportunities in working with pupils in SEN schools and after today, I am more than happy to travel to course to build on the knowledge gained”.
Coaches viewed the sessions on increasing knowledge of the National Curriculum and the ways teaching staff and coaches can work in partnership as particularly beneficial along with the opportunities presented for further professional development which are facilitated by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
After the event, Rafe Payne, a new recruit to the Tamworth SSP team this year was happy as the morning “opened my eyes to the grand scheme of things relating to PESSYP and allowed me to find out about accessing courses other than Cricket specific ones for my CV”.
Images of new recruit Rafe in action
Ian Smith, the Tamworth SSP Coach Manager was very happy with the Conference feedback provided by the coaches and is now looking forward to planning next years event.

Gladiators...Ready?
Outdoor adventure ropes course, Aerial Extreme, launches a campaign this week to find the region’s best ‘Gladiators’ to take part in a gruelling inter-county Gladiator challenge in Trentham on Saturday 4th July.
Site management are looking for five representatives each from Stoke-on-Trent, Crewe & Nantwich, Derby and Stafford to come together in a battle of the fittest and fastest and take part in the ultimate ‘Clash of the Titans.’ Each town will be competing for the 2009 title plus fantastic prizes.
Aerial Extreme’s Annual Summer Sizzler featuring ‘The Gladiator Challenge’ consists of a day for the family that will include a free BBQ and kids entertainment that will finish with the Gladiator Challenge at 5pm.
“This is a competition for people of all ages and abilities; often the fastest contestants are the youngest so we want to encourage everyone to enter,” said Site Manager Alex Dick. “The entire day will be a big thank you to our customers and the chance to meet new faces, plus have lots of fun!”
The Gladiator Challenge will consist of all 20 contenders jumping from the 40ft freefall jump with a container of water. The 10 with the most amount of water in the container when they reach the bottom will go through to the next challenge – the time trial. All 10 will have to complete the ropes course in the fastest time, hindered by the course’s very own Gladiators trying to slow them down. The three with the quickest times will go through to the grand final – the eliminator, where they will be pursued by a Gladiator. The contestant that reaches the furthest distance on the course will be the ultimate winner!
To enter, email your:
As long as you reach 1.4m in height, there is no minimum age to enter. The course will be open through the majority of the day and is currently taking bookings. The BBQ will start from 4pm.
Spectators will be encouraged to join in and cheer for their favourite plus bring their own water pistols.
The event will also be in support of the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, Aerial Extreme’s chosen charity for 2009-2010.
