Background Launching in 2010, Community Games will see people of all ages and abilities across the West Midlands staging their own sporting and cultural events as part of the region’s celebrations of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. From egg and spoon races and athletics to poetry and dance competitions – anything goes – as long as the events are run by local communities for local communities.
Part of the region’s cultural plans for the L2012 Games, Community Games is inspired by the annual Wenlock Olympian Games in Shropshire and is funded by Legacy Trust UK. Community Games will officially launch across the region in early 2010, but in the meantime people can get a sneak preview of what’s involved with eight ‘teaser’ events.
Designed to give communities and groups a taste of what goes into organising a Community Games and the sorts of activities they might include in their own games, these fun events will take place across the West Midlands throughout the summer of 2009. You can join in and be part of the fun at Haywood Community Games Festival, on 4 July, 2009, parade at 1pm, gates open 11am.
For 2010, a range of resources will be developed to help communities stage their events, inspired by the ideals of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. As well as a practical toolkit, there will be training for Games leaders and support to help facilitate the staging of these events in the run up to 2012. Further information will be available online soon or in the meantime, from Clare Tougher at clare.tougher@artscouncil.org.uk
