Special Schools Sports Festival - 2 July 2009 |
The Special Schools Sports festival organised by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) continues to go from strength to strength and will be in its eighth year when it is held on Thursday 02nd July at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton upon Trent.
The date was chosen so that it ties in with the Youth Sport Trust’s National School Sport week, which starts on Monday 29th June. The aim of this week is to celebrate all that has been achieved in PE and School Sport and encourage all schools to raise the profile of PE & School Sport at a local level.
The Special Schools Sports Festival, which is being sponsored by Staffordshire telecommunications company Qualitel, will feature coaching sessions and mini competitions in athletics, cricket, football, badminton, tag rugby, canoeing and archery.
The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Councillor Geoff Morrison and former Great Britain Paralympian, Marcus Asbury will be supporting the athletes on the day.
SASSOT’s Club Development Manager, Chris Turner commented: “We’re delighted with the response to this year’s festival. We’ll have over 350 athletes participating at Shobnall representing 13 of the county’s special schools. The festival will provide a day to celebrate sport and to develop pathways for pupils to continue to participate in sport outside of the school environment.”
