Wednesbury Cricket Club

Wednesbury Cricket Club will be receiving an award at the Sandwell PE & Sport Celebration Evening on Monday 29th June 2009. The award is for 'School to Club' links. Obviously this is on the back of the Chance to Shine Work that we have been doing in the local Primary and Secondary Schools.

Club Secretary Chris Williams commented "We are really please to receive the award for developing club/school links in Sandwell Schools. Not much cricket was played in Wednesbury Primary Schools until the advent of the Chance to Shine Scheme.

Children now have the opportunity to play cricket in curriculum and in after school clubs and also to get involved with their local cricket club, through cricket festivals and holiday coaching schemes. We are starting to see an increase in numbers in our junior section and one girl has already graduated from Chance to Shine scheme to junior cricket and then onto the Staffordshire squad".

Wednesbury's 'Chance to Shine' coaching scheme is delivered by Prakash Patel and Andy Forman.

Session's are delivered to the following schools:

Moorlands Primary School

Mesty Croft Primary School

Park Hill Primary School

St John's CE Primary School

Old Park Primary School

Wood Green Junior School

St Mary's RC Primary School

Wood Green High School College of Sports (girls only session and under 13 session)

The second Chance to Shine Primary School Festival will take place at Wednesbury CC on Tuesday 30th June.

Chris Guest Called Up For England

Staffordshire Cricket full time employee and County Under 16 coach Chris Guest has received a call up to play indoor cricket for England.

Chris has had to go through a rigorous selection process since he was invited to trial for the squad six months ago and his selection is a testament to his hard work at learning the new skills for this game.

Chris started playing Indoor cricket for Brewood in the Wolverhampton indoor league two years ago. That was followed up by appearances for Coachcraft in the midweek league. This year Chris has played in the national league for Wolverhampton Jamia and it was it his captain there who encouraged him to trial for the national side.

The team now trains two or three times a month as a team to hone their skills ready to travel to Australia for the tournament .

The World indoor tournament will take place from the 10th to 17th October 2009 in Brisbane, Queensland.

Chris said “ I am massively proud to be able to represent England at the world cup. There is a great step up in quality and Australia hold all the three world cups at mens, womens and under 19 level”.

Chris then added “I have some really tough training sessions ahead of me to get up to the right standard. I have only been playing a couple of years  but some of the England boys are experienced indoor players. The sport seems to be on the up again with lots more centres opening up so I hope to see more Staffordshire cricketers in the England set up soon”.

The full squad  :

Adam.Breakspear (capt), Sean.Ongers, Simon.Dunning, Blake Van De Linde, Michiel.Bester, Faldiel Bassadien, Clint McCabe, Russell Ongers, Chris Guest, Shafiq Ahmed, Jason Green, Simon Roberts
