Step into Sport success throughout Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent |
Step into Sport is part of the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). Step into Sport targets 11–19 year olds by providing a simple framework of co-ordinated opportunities at a local level, to enable young people to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership and volunteering in sport.
The purpose of the Step into Sport programme is to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of young people engaged in volunteering and leadership, with consequent benefits to schools, clubs, the community and the young people themselves. In essence the Step into Sport programme is the tool, which enables schools and sports clubs to grow young people as leaders and deploy them as active volunteers both within the school and community settings.
All of the 10 School Sport Partnerships in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are involved in the Step into Sport programme and from the 07/08 cohort of young volunteers involved, 100 students have volunteered within a community sports placement.
SASSOT would like to congratulate these young volunteers for the commitment they have shown to their sports volunteer placement and by developing their leadership skills though sport.
SASSOT recognises that the critical role of volunteers is fundamental for sport to continue to thrive throughout the sub-region and the need for better support and investment in the volunteer workforce.
The challenge for sports clubs is to recruit the expected increase in the number of volunteers to meet the needs of the growing numbers of people wishing to participate in sport.
