Disability Awareness Day at Stoke City FC
Staffordshire Football Association and Stoke City FC held this year’s Disability Awareness Day on Saturday 8th March at the Britannia Stadium.
Over 200 children and adults with disabilities and impairments from around the Staffordshire County attended the day.
They were treated to free coaching sessions from Stoke City’s Football in the Community staff who all have an FA Coaching Disabled Footballers qualification as well as attending the Stoke City V Burnley match free of charge in the afternoon.
On a cool, blustery day, the participants from the respective schools, organisations and football clubs were invited to take part in coaching, where they could improve their technique as well as picking up new skills in a fun filled environment.
The day is held annually to raise awareness and to promote disability football as well as offering the students a chance to feel a football environment.
Lindsay Leighton, Disability Liaison Officer at Stoke City said: “The students have really enjoyed themselves. Each student was encouraged to participate in the day.”
Jamie Leaning, Staffordshire FA’s Disability Coach said “The day was devoted to giving people an insight into disability football opportunities within the county and in particular what Stoke City as a club can offer.
Many students with disabilities are sceptical about getting into sport for a variety of reasons. Some may be in classes or in a mainstream school that is not able to offer support for their personal needs so may miss out so this event is perfect to highlight the available opportunities.”
During half time at the Championship match between Stoke City and Burnley, both teams supporters were treated to a demonstration game between Manchester United’s amputee team who gladly travelled down to play Stoke City’s Ability Counts team, the fans showed their appreciation for the exhibition match and both teams received a standing ovation after the short match.
There was also a presentation ceremony to two of the winners of the Staffordshire FA’s Special Schools 2007 competition atthe Disability Awareness Day.
